Devils offer Kovalchuk 17 year contract

17 years for more than $100million with Kovalchuk earning $100million in the first 10 years.

17 years? What the hell. That's the biggest attempt to circumvent the CBA that I've ever seen.

I'd be 34 when his contract runs out.

The way NJ is approaching this is projected to anticipate Brodeur's possible retirement, once Brodeur goes, Kovalchuk may be this franchise's only hope of not becoming the NY Islanders

League should make that illegal. All +5 years contract that go above age 40 should not be allowed.

I bet you the Habs would've made the Pronger contract last year, and it would've been bumped.

But for Steinbrenner and other American owners....

I bet it's something like 110 mil or 120 mil over 17 years... Getting the most in the first 10-12 seasons and he won't play the remaining 5-7 seasons.

Once Subban's contract is up, offer him a 40 year deal.

It will be interesting if this becomes official, what will the league have to say about this, since they had problems with a couple of the long term contracts last summer like Hossa's, Ponger's, etc... I would think that Lou holds a lot of pull and respect so would be interesting to see how this shakes out.

League allowed something similar with Hossa and Pronger, now they are screwed ... they've opened pandora's box.

Something more sensible would be when he's around age 25, give him 81 mil for 20 years.

In theory, wouldn't the league avoid this type of situation if they just made the player's actual salary for the season be their cap hit instead of the average salary over the length of the entire contract?

Lou's boss has even more pull... Y'know, Ol' George Steinbrenner?

It's like noobtube in Call of duty; it's cheap, not everyone uses, but until they get rid of it, it's still part of the game and doesn't prevent you from using it.

That could also be bused though, a team right up against the cap could sign someone to a league minimum contract and be stacked, but then have them make more and more money years later when other contracts come off the books.

Using the average is the best solution imo as you'll always have a big cap number even when the salary dwindles.

The NHL should curb these Hossa contracts though some how. Like any 5+ year contracts stay on the cap even if the player retires regardless of the age they were when they signed.

LOU

wtf 10M$/ year for kovalchuk ?Rolf this is just too ********.Kovalchuk is not Ovechkin,Crosby or Malkin , he won't save a franchise. If Lou wants a franchise player , he should make a rebuild by trading most of the player execpt Parize and Zajac and draft Couturier/Larsson and sign one great UFA next year ( thorton ,richards, semin) with the 10M$

If going to age 44 gets permitted, then sign Markov to a 12-year extension as soon as the Kovalchuk deal is approved. 7-6-6-5-4-3-2-1-1-1-1-1, cap hit $3.17M.

And more especially, the New York post, which is Murdoch's and he has a war going on over the Yankees TV rights with Steinbrenner's YES Network, Steinbrenner is also owners of the Devils.

That is insane. They should make a rule against contracts over 5 years that would run after a player turns 40 or something like that.

That would be nice, but I would sweeten the pot for Markov to accept, something just a bit more, since he would probably retire when he'll 38-39 if not before, kinda, take it up to a 3,5 cap hit...
