Markov to become Canadian citizen next week

Quote:
Montreal Canadiens defenceman Andrei Markov will be sworn in as a Canadian citizen next week at the downtown Citizenship Court. Sources tell me a pitch was made to the Canadiens to do this at centre ice at an actual game, but it was turned down….

I knew he had applied for citizenship a few years ago but it's nice to see he'll finally get it!

I'm pretty sure American citizens have to denounce all other citizenships they possess... which is stupid. As for international play, once you play a single international game you have to stick with that team for your whole career. Some people are upset about this because it means Tyler Myers will never play for team U.S.A.

I love Markov so much. Hate to see all those trade proposal including him that starting poping up recently. He's one of the best defenseman in the East and a great team player. There's no doubt that he loves playing for this team and that he plans on staying here.

He wasn't able to have an impact in the playoff because since he hit his prime, he never was able to be 100% healthy during the off-season.

Markov is still our MVP.

Interesting. During the winter Olympics I remember a Russian who had recently got his Canadian citizenship and entered the biathlon representing Canada. I thought I also remember hearing the reason he he wasn't allowed to represent Russia was because under Russian rule, you are not allowed to represented their country if you are a citizen of another. Something about not wanting to promoted emigration because a lot of the population had been leaving in the past 15 years.

Markov cannot play for any other team at the international stage because he already represented Russia at the senior level.

Really? I thought there was some kind of rule that said you could switch countries, but you could only do it once. You gotta get your new country's citizenship and then wait like 4 years to represent them, or something like that.

People are seriously upset? Pf. Look at how many Canadians with dual citizenship have run off to represent the USA. This is one of the few times they've come to us.

It would have been funny to see Markov sing O Canada at centre ice, as part of his Citizenship mandatory ceremony

Oh well....
