Bettmann is paid very little compared to other leagues. He is not even doing THAT bad of a job either, never really gets praise for the good work he does.

The salary still remains a fraction of what other professional sports commissioners are paid. Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig ($18.35 million) and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell ($10.9 million) both earn more. NBA Commissioner David Stern is believed to earn more than $10 million, but his salary is not reported publicly because the league doesn’t claim tax-exemption status as an association.

I agree, he works in the interest of the owners. People ***** and complain, but he's doing his job.

Agreed! Can't stand him, but he is just doing his job. I think Selig is paid about 18 million for his escapades.

Ask people in Hamilton what they think of him, and then ask people in Pittsburgh what they think of him, it is all relative to what your scenario is.

Of course those other leagues are in much better shape financially. I would like to see what those commissioners salaries are compared to the league revenue/team profits. My guess is that Buttman is waaaay overpaid

I'll try...

1. "How can he live on that?"

2. "I guess he must have signed that contract with Glen Sather."

3. "Big bucks come to small packages."

4. "Did he sell his house in Québec yet? Boy, those taxes are just going to eat that salary up."

5. "Is that over one year or 10 years or 17 years?"

6. "I guess the team owners actually did win that group purchase of the scratch & win 'Cash For Life' lottery."

7. "Does that money come from the profits of the Phoenix, Columbus, Nashville, Atlanta, Tampa Bay & Florida organizations?"

How's that?

He really needs all that money to pay his personal tailor in order to make him suits that fit him My only complaint against Bettman is that he dosen't really seem too keen on bringing teams to Canada. Even if he says he is, it's all talk in my opinion. Look at what happened with Phoenix... And he is a bit slow to solve problems like head shots, etc., but that might just be how things work and not necessarily his fault.

Wrong in the case of the NBA. NHL is doing better financially than NBA.

That's because the good work he does is done away from the spotlight and the bad work is done right under it. How much money going into the owners' pockets is irrelevant in the day to day life of fans, except when we whine about ticket prices.

Questionable marketing strategies, inconsistence by the refs, double standards in the disciplinary process and long delays when changes are needed to protect the players, however, are topics that fans talk a lot about. Hence why it seems like everyone hates Bettman.

Let me re-phrase...Teams like the Lakers/Celtics/Heat are in great financial shape.

Overall though, if you look at the number of teams that made/lost money last year, the ratio is better in the NHL. NBA is also the league that has highest % of expenses on player salary.

Let me try to find the article again, but yes, overall the average NHL team is stronger financially than the average NBA team.

edit: found it and from quickly scanning the article and it's even worse than I thought:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...070704772.html

for the 2009-10 season, 25 of 30 NBA teams lost money. Stern has said as a whole the league will be losing approx $380-400 million this year.

So league revenues went up 20% since the lockout but his salary went up 100%. Makes sense.

Bettman doesn't deserve even half of that. Then again, all athletes are overpaid, but if anything, the commissioner shouldn't be payed more than 95% of the players.

I find that salary surprisingly small, just like Bettman.

Actually i just gained some respect for Bettman given the relatively modest salary he gets and how much **** he takes (deservedly or not).

One could argue that he should definitely be paid more than players, considering he works a lot harder and gets much more tangible work done.

Relatively modest, and seven million dollar salary just don't go together man.
