Maybe this evaluation camp was a way to have a better look to our NCAA prospects, but many of them have been signed and will attend the rookie camp anyway

They'll still have a rookie camp in September.

Most of those players (with some exceptions of course) never made it to dev camp because of the cost.

It's brutal listening to XM Home Ice right now and all the reports on dev camps.

Guys, we over looked the most obvious reason:

We have no prospects!

Somebody posted on the prospects board that the Avs are having an orientation camp from July 9-12; presumably not open to the public.

Tony Gallagher: Prospects camp not worth the cost

Quote:
And this isn't to single them out, either. Everyone's doing it. Look at Taylor Hall's summer. He had a lengthy junior playoff, then went to the combine, the draft and all the media stuff, press conference in Edmonton, then back this week for the Oilers development camp, then back in early September for their prospects training camp. What time did he have to get bigger, faster, stronger?
Considering the debate here, I found this article interesting. It's Canuck-centric, and obviously each team will have a different set of goals, priorities, and prospects, but apparently the Avs aren't the only ones pondering the overall value of a prospects camp.

Read that article myself and I agree with it.
I don't believe you need to have a camp every season.
Plus with the CBA you have to be careful.
You're only allowed one camp, and the Habs have had two this off-season already and they are telling the NHL it was one camp with two sessions.

It didn't hurt the Avs AT ALL last season. You can still run rookie camp before training camp if you run a dev camp.
