This! One thing that goes unnoticed is how the Habs leverage RFA status, Lappy next year, AK too... Good deals that leave the team some leverage.

I'm all for extending AK now as well (go ahead and mock) go 3 or 4 years at 2.75 or 3mill per... some times you need to take chances to get a bargain (maybe he becomes that 35 goal man).

Last year we could have extended Tomas at maybe 5 years, 16 mill, and everyone would have been pissed, but it would look great now

Based on what I've seen from Price so far in his career....I wouldn't pay him a penny more than $2 million a season right now!!!!!

He's gotten worse every year and still hasn't shown any maturity. He hasn't shown any indication that he can handle the pressure of playing in Montreal either...and thats important. Halak handled the pressure and the spotlight very well and he's improved every season since joining the Habs.....he's the guy we should have kept, but thats another story.

I would sign Price for 2 years/$2 million a year. If he doesn't improve this year and next year.....then he's gone for whatever we can get for him.

I believe that Price has great talent and could be a great goalie someday, but I don't think he'll ever step up his game and be that #1 goalie we've needed since Roy left. I honestly think that Price will have his best seasons in the NHL in another teams jersey. Montreal is too much for him....at least thats what he has shown so far with his inconsistant play.

he surely will be > 2.2 (his salary 09-10)

I have a question btw
what happens if the habs cannot negociate with Price...?
Ex
Prices asks 10 millions and the habs offers him 1 million..
he cant go to arbitration...

It's posts like these that makes me think our fanbase only uses one mentality, the 'what have you done for me lately' one. Price played like a number one goalie in this league from October throughout early December. Badluck followed by the team struggling during the month of December resulted in him losing his job to Halak not horrible performances that resulted with him being pulled. There are times where Price would let in the unluckiest goals this season, i.e Mara whacking his stick at his head against Phoenix while the puck is in the slot, Hamrlik diving into him on a 2 on 1, the goal against NJ where the puck was going wide and went in after hitting his glove.

Price didn't have a bad season last year, his performances were much better than in 2008-2009 where pretty much everyone had an off year (except a few players like Gorges and Markov).

As for the OP's question, I can see Price getting between 2-2.75 based on a 2 or 3 year contract.

Not over 2,25M. If he's reasonable, he'll take this.

No way his agent will look into signing a long-term deal with his past 2 years anyway.

Considering we HAVE to sign him, I'm not sure what figure I'd give him. Since we're married to him and up against the cap, I wouldn't hate to see us us giving him a long term deal if it keeps his cap hit down.

But Considering we traded Halak for cap reasons and Halak settled for 3.75, Price shouldn't get more than 2.25.

$2 million or a little under for two years seems fair. Gustavsson got $1.35 million with slightly lesser stats.

I have to disagree on some of your points.

I thought he gained a lot of maturity last season having to sit and work his butt off to play due to Halak's big year.

Also I'm not sure how you can say he got worse every year, the stats don't back that up.

Price IMHO has been victim of too much being given to him too soon as well as unfair expectations for a 20-21-22 year old goalie. His development is right on par with some of the top guys in the NHL.

$16.25 million - 5 years.

If he doesn't pan out we can always trade him.

The penalties didnt change anything, the result of the game or the series. Something people cant seem to get through their head, but some people use it as a pro price argument and others anti-price.

The fan thing is ridiculous, overblown and so long ago.

To be fair, he's mostly inconsistent due to his lack of work ethic (which has since improved this year).

Halak never had the same expectations as Price and Price was also rushed into the NHL at a very young age, when he wasn't mentally ready for it. I still don't think he's ready for it. I'm not sure Carey has the emotional make-up to be a top NHL goalie to be honest. Halak never had to deal with so much media, etc.

inb4 "those two unsportsman-like penalties changed the series"
those penalties didnt changed anything to the series
because he lost 8 straight playoffs games we should get rid of him ?

he's 22 and played more than 130 games which is great.

He's just looking at the empty part of the glass because we could also say let's keep him because in his first playoff series he posted two shutouts, one in a game seven and only let in 1 goal in three of his wins.

Weren't you the one who said anything over $1.75M for Price would be a terrible deal and mocked me when I said he'd probably get over $2M? Seems you'v upped your offer by $500k and into the range I suggested.

Looks like you're jumping the bandwagon here and going with the popular choice of $2M+. I'd have some respect for you if you at least stuck to your first quote of $1.75M. Now you'r just a follower of popular sentiment.
