If you dump Cote, we have 20 players and $1.128M, which means we as long a Bartulis spends about 30 days in the minors over the course of the season, you can call up anyone with a $600K cap hit or less for the season.
Besides Bartulis i dont think many of the other prospects have an ELC that pays them that cheap. Most i believe are like 800k i believe. Not 100% sure though.
So Laliberte signing today for $550,000 has a great chance to make the Flyers!
Seems like along with Cote, one highly paid forward has to go.....I guess thats why all this Gagne stuff is going on.
It all comes down to cap!
I have a question; what exactly happens when a team is over the salary cap? Does the team then have to bury salary in the minors until you're under the cap?
Let's say the season started tomorrow, and the roster still stayed the same as it is today. Would we have to do with Simon Gange what we basically did with Briere last year - i.e. - play him in the minors for a bit until the situation gets sorted out?

Briere last year was injury rehab. If the season started today, we'd have 3 options.
1) Pull a last minute trade.
2) Attempt to LTIR someone and fool the league.
3) Waive Gagne/Kimmo/whoever and most likely watch them get claimed.

Here's an extreme hypothetical. What's the limit on the taxi squad for the playoffs? If a team buries a vet in the AHL, and the NHL team makes the playoffs while the AHL team does not, would that veteran be eligible to play in the playoffs?
No, I don't mean Gagne. I was just thinking about this recently though.

I believe so yes, no waivers in the postseason, but I'm not positive about that.
I mean, I thought of some extreme hypotheticals to bury Pronger, but realistically, it's all cap circumvention.

...I actually don't think so, but it's a rule I've never bothered to look into. For example, I don't think Gauthier was able to come up and play for us in the playoffs if we'd wanted him the year he was buried.

I think free agents need to be signed by the trade deadline and players subject to waivers need to be up by the end of the season, correct?
Because I could see us sending him down to the AHL and signing Guerin for $500,000 and our cap is set.

Assuming all bonuses get paid out, we are looking at $40,000 cap space.
Cheechoo was called up for the Sens this past season and played a game in the playoffs.
Cheechoo also played 61 games for the Sens last year... not sure how it all works with who is eligible and not eligible to come up. But I was of the impression that Gauthier could not have come up and played for us.

I would assume it's 1-way, but it doesn't really matter as far as sending him to the AHL. If he's not in the starting 6, he better be in the AHL playing games.
Important to note is that the site (http://www.nhlscap.com/waivers.htm) where Metzer quotes the waiver guidelines states "for 90% of players, this is largely true … but there are exceptions".
If Bartulis is exempt, then I have no problem with signing Guerin. If Bartulis is not exempt, then the risks become greater.

Dump Walker and be done with it.
Personally, I want Bartulis getting reps as is... I'm not sure why this team is so *ing idiotic about breaking in young D. Let him play on the third pairing. If he can't hack it come spring, acquire a vet.

Yeah, same way I feel. I don't think our management is smart enough to do that though.
I'm not even sure why Homer had to get Walker in the Gagne deal. The guy has negative value and now he's probably going to force Bartulis off the roster.

I am in the same boat. I think Bartulis had shown some great progress, but the playoffs where obviously a bit too much for him to handle.
I think he needs a full season of at least being the 7th Dman. Having him sit in a press box for 80% of the season is only going to make him regress.
I just don't see Homer dumping Walker. He traded for him and believes you cannot have enough defense, so Walker will at least get a chance to play. He needs Walker to try and redeem him as much as possible for the Gagne trade.
Unless Betts isn't cleared to play before the season starts and goes on IR, then it is going to be either Carcillo, Powe or Bartulis that is forced off this team.
Let us just hope Bartulis is waiver exempt, and at least he gets some ice time in the AHL.
Ok, can we get some sort of clarification here on the salary cap situation this season? CapGeek says we have around $3 million plus some in LTIR that could be utilized. On the other hand, I think Broad Street Hockey says we have virtually none. Is there any way to clear this up, besides just re-posting one of those two sites that I just mentioned or saying which one is right without explanation? I suppose the question I mean to ask is which is right and why?
Cap geek has us at 413,000$ in cap space + 1,448,000 in LTIR cap space. I don't know where you are getting the 3 + mil figures from, but they are wrong. Once Walker is back, we will have pretty much no cap space again unless he is waived or doesn't get healthy

There are a lot of numbers being thrown around but the only important one is how much under the daily cap limit we are so that we can start banking cap. Right now we are saving enough to pick up a pro-rated salary of about 3.5M at the trade deadline. Which is not all that impressive but much better than nothing.
LTIR and it's use is largely what is responsible for conflicting numbers.

The problem is simple, they have LTIR they have to worry about. If Walker gets medical clearance, he needs to be able to come back onto the cap until he can be waived.

The number will be slightly higher given the length of time Pronger has been out (and will be out) as well as the fact that the bonuses in some of these deals (JVR, Bob) doesnt get applied to the cap until after the season ends. JVR's base is 900k, Bob's is 900k. Technically, they only count for 900k.
So, if you assume they get zero bonus dollars, your cap space climbs to roughly $3mill. Now, I won't add in Pronger dollars considering we have Lappy and Walker on IR. Since $3mill capspace is with 22 players, we can call up Bartulis/Syvret and have 23 guys and still have roughly $2.4 to play with.
At most, I wouldn't want to pick up more then $1.5 mill cap dollars at the deadline if possible though, no telling if Walker will ever have to be put back on the cap.
No one but the Flyers can give you the exact number. The cap is calculated daily and it very intricate and complex. We can only give you roundabout numbers in certain scenarios.
The team is under the cap even with Walker's salary. Once he is healthy we may need to clear up a roster spot, but we won't have to clear cap space. I don't know why people are thinking that we will.
You can't bank cap space and be using LTIR at the same time. The mere fact that we are banking 4K a day means that we are taking Walker's cap hit without issue.
