It was expected according to reports that I had read earlier this summer. There was just an abundance of defensemen all of a sudden in the NYR system. I guess they preferred Sauer over him, or perhaps it was just that Potter wanted out because it was rumored he was unhappy with the lack of chances to make it to the NHL
Potter must have actually tried when he played with the Rangers because I don't know how anyone could say they liked him from watching him play in Hartford.
Corey Potter, the 26-year-old defenseman once perceived as an excellent prospect, is apparently on his way out of the organization as a an unrestricted Group VI free agent.
The Rangers do have interest in retaining Potter, a 2003 fourth-round pick out of Michigan State who played a combined eight games the past two seasons, but they are leery of signing him to the one-way contract he's seeking because if sent down, he would be susceptible to re-entry waivers on the way back.
Potter will be in the AHL this season. Pittsburgh has players similar to Potter in their organization. Don Maloney didn't want Potter. Maloney didn't make the move for Bobby Sanguinetti either. Sanguinetti will be in the AHL too. Corvo,Babchuk and McBain on the right side. Carolina may re-sign Carson who also shoots righty. Maloney has Jovo for another season. He re-signed Aucion and Morris. Has Yandle and Lepisto. The other Sauer brother is still hurt. He lost Michalek in free agency and traded Vandermeer to Edmonton. Maloney has OEL,Goncharov and Summers. You would have thought Maloney would have signed Potter to a 2 way deal for the NHL minimum. Potter would have a better shot playing for PHX with some of the age on Aucion. Maloney probably thought his prospects are better than Sanguinetti and he's right about that.

I would have liked Sather to turn these type of players into draft picks. Even a 7th rounder. We do well with late round picks. I think Potter is a good depth D-man. You can never have enough, except us.
Once again a guy Renney Valued and looked like he had a future and Torts didn't give a second look to. We have gone from the Rangers look to be building from the defense out to who not a lot of prospects on d for the Rangers.

I mean they have pretty good depth on the blue-line.
Staal, Girardi, MDZ are all solid building pieces for the future and they have McDonagh, McIlrath, Valentenko, Pashnin, Kundratek, Niemi, Sauer, Baldwin and Maggio in their system on the way.
He was surpassed by Staal, Girardi, MDZ and Gilroy and looks to have been surpassed by McDonagh already. He just wasn't good enough.
what are you talking about? Potter is ECHL fodder.
He is a solid AHL Dman, boarderline NHL Dman. Steady and doesnt make too many mistakles. Will play for the Minimum. sorry we lost him. Would be a good 7th dman.

He wasn't a solid AHL defenseman last year. He was ranged from okay to crappy when I saw him, and people that follow the Pack like Jarkko seem to agree.
He may catch on as a seventh defenseman eventually, but he hasn't been that to this point so I'm not sure how anyone can label him as such.

I hate Torts too, but this seems off base. We have three good young defenseman already on the roster, and quite a few players in the system with good potential. Defensive prospect depth is still a strength in our organization.
an nhl dman has a window of opportunity that only lasts so long before he runs the risk of being labeled as an ahl lifer or gets passed over by the latest draft picks.
potter was the victim of a few years of excellent dman drafts.
valentenko, kundratek and niemi all have as much, or more, upside going forward.

You don't see any GMs turning Corey Potter's into any type of draft picks, I don't know what this obsession with turning every average prospect to dawn the Rangers system into SOMETHING is, it started around the time everyone started overusing the term "assets"
