I can see it now, home opener for Montreal, still no Captain announced.
They do the opening ceremonies, all the players come out 1 by 1 the crowd is going crazy and curious at the same time as to who the next team captain's gonna be.

To everyone's amazement all the potential captain's are already on the ice(Cammalleri, Gorges, Markov, Gionta, Gill, Gomez)

Then we hear Michel Lacroix's voice: "Maintenant votre nouveau Capitain, your new team Captain... *crowd is nervous, anxious, impatient* ..... Marc-Andre Bergeron!!!
*crowd goes silent, you hear a pin drop, everyone is in shock.... and out he walks with a huge grin on his face*

*****
Pierre McGuire is going crazy on TV shocked at the fact that he thought he knew everything and did not see this coming.
Bob McKenzie posts on Twitter: Canadiens have just signed MA Bergeron to a 5 years 10 million$ contract.
HFBoards Habs board explodes taking along the rest of the site.
Benoit Brunet is doing his creepy laugh somewhere "ohh la la ha ha ha ha ha"
*****

... And then I wake up screaming, covered in sweat, shaking.

I hope this doesn't happen, not even in my wildest nightmare!

maybe we are all wrong and they name Plekanec?
I mean he signed for long and didnt look up what he could get on free market, maybe they told him something big would happen for him, like captaincy?

Why don't we try the opposite this year? I say put a C on all the players jerseys.

It's already on all of the jerseys.

Right!

So the CH does NOT stand for Centre Hice, as often rumoured, but rather Captain Here.

Carey Price is lacking pressure on him being captain will get him to play clutch.

Cammy would be good too but has not been a favorite in the race for captain.

Because of the contract situation and what Darche said, I think Gionta should be considered as the first choice.

The only other possibility would be Markov, if he is signed for a few more years.
According to who?

Here on the board, his name is mentioned as often or mroe than the other players.

He was an inspiration on the ice in the playoffs. He always has good things to say about his teamates. and he seemingly took Subban under his wing.

im all for gorges or gionta

make cammy score goals, not worry about the added pressure of the C

But if they name Gorges, they better be sure he signs a long term extension. Canadiens are not ones to have a captain for a few years and let them go.

Huh?

* Newsy Lalonde, 1910–11 (1 year)
* Jack Laviolette, 1911–12 (1 year)
* Jimmy Gardner, 1913–15 (2 years)
* Howard McNamara, 1915–16 (1 year)
* Sprague Cleghorn, 1922–25 (3 years)
* Billy Coutu, 1925–26 (1 year)
* George Hainsworth, 1932–33 (1 year)
* Sylvio Mantha, 1933–36 (3 years)
* Albert "Babe" Siebert, 1936–39 (3 years)
* Walter Buswell, 1939–40 (1 year)
* Bill Durnan, 1948 (January - April, not even a full year)
* Doug Harvey, 1960–61 (1 year)
* Serge Savard, 1979–81 (2 years)
* Guy Carbonneau and Chris Chelios, 1989–90 (co-captains)(Chelios, 1 year)
* Kirk Muller, 1994–95 (1 year)
* Mike Keane, 1995 (April-December, not even a full year)
* Pierre Turgeon, 1995–96 (1 year)
* Vincent Damphousse, 1996–99 (3 years)

2 captains that served not even a full season, 10 captains served only one year, 2 captains served two seasons and 4 captains served three seasons. Given, they didn't let most of these guys go, but it isn't a new tradition to have a captain for a year or two and then take it off of them or let them go.

I've always beleived that the players follow a Captain that they vote for themselves.

Let the players choose. After last seasons playoff run and next seasons training camp they will know who deserves it, who can take the pressure and who wants it.

It should be a 3 horses race between Gionta, Markov and Cammalleri. With the two remaining guys without a "C" getting an "A". Rotate with the others "G" on the road if you want. I still think one of Cammalleri, Gionta or Markov should get the C. And I wouldn't be surprised to see Markov get it.

I thought you liked Gorges ?

I agree with the players voting. I am not happy with the decision of having the GM and Coach forcing it on the team.
To be honest, in a context where the players don't choose themselves, I am 100% ok with Gorges, Gionta, Cammalleri or Markov. A great leader doesn't need to have C on his jersey to leave his mark.
Just as long as they don't give it to Spacek.

I would. It will be stupid to put more pressure on a guy who barely speaks English in a city that wants their captain to speak French.
