Olli doesnt have to rob the bank...he was stealing from the NHL teams...that's more than enough

yeah a 5.25 cap hit for several years is more than a bank machine would hold

3M is the main point. For that money one should except a good value (50+ points in a supporting role) for it when comparing it to other FA contracts made this summer. 5.5M was overpayment.

This was a while ago but just reading it now. When I posted the original message news hadn't broke of Langkow's injury. I wasn't upset about the Tanguay signing, at 1.7 million, damn nowadays that's Nystrom/Boogard money so it's pretty hard to criticize that. So you shuffle Tanguay in and Moss out to your proposed top 6, and it's not nearly as bad. Plus Langkow is not traded, waived, dead, retired, or whatever, he's just recovering slowly... that's all.

your missing the key word. POTENTIAL. or are you saying just because jokinen and tanguay have had mediocre seasons that theres absolutely no way they can form a good trio with iggy? ..... can i have a look at your crystal ball please?

I agree. I asm looking forward to seeing Tanguay and Iginla on the same line again. 3 years is not that long ago and the two had career seasons together. I hope the Flames could get a guy like Savard for the centre. If so a top 3 centre corps of Savard - Jokinen - BAcklund sounds great. This is also assuming LAngkow remains injured and is not back. Then, maybe Sutter knows something about Langkow that we don't.

It's a serviceable 1st line. Just don't expect Marleau-Thornton-Heatley numbers.

honestly I think if we can atleast have a first line that gells together, I will be happy.

it does not have to be the best but so long they have chemistry and put up 60-70 points..iginla gets 80+ I think we will be fine as we have pretty good scoring depth

Hell, if its an improvement on halftheteam-Jokinen/Stajan-Iginla numbers, I'll be happy.

Sure but how many teams have that first line. You can not seriously expect every team to have a line that puts up that many points...

17 goals, 37 assists, 54 points. 28th amongst the centers in scoring. Nice way to silence the critics of the deal.

Not exactly mind-boggling though. But for 3 million that works out fairly well.

If I didn't know it was Jokinen, I'd actually be ok with those numbers

BTW he is 31st according thehockeynews.com and he is also the worst at -16 of all centers in front of him.

PPG wise, he is ranked 36th.

Anybody know about his play before when he was putting up big numbers in comparison to how he`s playing now? Just curious if there were any obvious changes.

You mean back in his Floriday days?

He has pretty much about 50% of his production from that time.

I attribute that to psych effects of cutting Zhitnik and the fact that it was the east and everyone was always feeding him passes on that team.

Well to go through some teams that come to mind out of the west:

Eriksson-Richards-xxxx
Ryan-Getz-Perry
Sedins and Burrows
Sharp-Towes-Kane
Zetterberg-Datsyuk-Franzen

Quite a few actually.

Can't really use Richards and Eriksson as an example, because they were similar to Tanguay and Iggy.

As for the rest of those lines, they also had some great offensive defenseman to move the puck around more. Seabrook and Keith both hit 40+ assists, majority of them coming with the top line. Lubo with Anaheim, Rafalski and Lidstrom with Detroit, Erhoff with Vancouver. Without their defense, their numbers would drop significantly.

Another thing to look at is depth, we finished above Dallas and Anaheim in goals for this year, and weren't far behind Chicago, yet out top line saw quite a drop in numbers compared to them. Chicago, Anaheim, Vancouver, and Detroit were 4 of the top 5 powerplay teams this year, and I'd say it's a safe bet the majority of the players you mentioned saw a lot of time on the powerplay units.

With the exception of Anaheim, they all had a much better faceoff %, and while I don't have the time to look into just those lines, these are just a few reasons as to why we saw so many points come from these lines.

You could also look at how many of these teams goals went with only 1 assist, or went unassisted, but thats way too much work for me.

Just got off work, was trying to make a point, but started rambling, not sure if it got across, lol. The moral of the story kids, is that offensive numbers aren't everything. There are things the statsheets don't tell us, but that, is for another day.
