Buff-Edm

To Edm:

Drew Stafford
Andrej Sekera

To Buff:

Andrew Cogliano
Tom Gilbert

What Edmonton gets: a streaky power forward who has alot of potential but likely needs to get out of buffalo to discover that and a young defensemen who has a lot of potential and needs to discover that as well

What Buffalo gets: the fastest skater in the league and a defensemen who can play Sekera's role much better

I hate this deal.

Who cares if Cogs is fast? He's even more inconsistent than Stafford. And we don't need another shrimp in the top-6 if he doesn't have superior skill, which Cogs does not have. Gilbert is solid, but he's not $3 mil better than Sekera, IMO. Gilbert is also making $10.5 mil over the next two seasons. No, thanks.

I'm gonna have to second that no. We need Cogliano like we need a whole in the head.

A whole hall? More like a doorway and some drywall to be named later...

I'm with Zip, that deal makes the team smaller and with how Gilbert struggled last year, it may not be much of an improvement offensively given how bad he was in his own zone.

If the Sabres are making a deal, they have to be looking at getting better effort, more skill, and at least staying the same size-wise. They can't afford to take on questionable performance that makes them smaller.

That said, watch Cogliano go out and tear it up once he finds a new home...

I wonder if Pitlick was a guy that was on the Sabres draft list?

One guy I wouldn't mind the Sabres picking up is Alex Plante.

He would add a big, physical RH Dman to the pipeline and if he has a good year, might be able to step in in 2011-12 to help replace Montador & Rivet.

id prefer to replace with experience/vet thru free agency or trade, and not rely even more prospects, youth, and young vets...

All other factors aside, I'd like to see Tommy Gilbert in a Sabres uniform. I watched him in person for several seasons with the Badgers (he scored the GWG for the 2006 NCAA Championship). He's a smart, hard working, calm defenseman of good character that's solid in his own-end play, and has (to my surprise) shown some playmaking and powerplay upside. His stats in Edmonton from the get-go have been impressive to me, and that's with a mediocre-at-best Oilers team over those years.

Gilbert has been making an average of $4M per year, and I think that's an absolutely reasonable market value for a defenseman with his abilities and potential.

And one step further, I think about the hole next to Myers, and I think about putting Gilbert there, and I like what I see. 6'8" Myers - 6'3" Gilbert -> big, solid defensive pair with offensive upside.

....and one of them is always on the backhand since they are both righties....

That was my point.

I was shuddering to think who he would feel would be an adequate replacement for Montador/Rivet next summer.

Rivet will be addition by subtraction unless he finds the fountain of youth this offseason...thing didn't look good for the old captain

Only ONE of Lydman or Tallinder was going to be kept. If unsuccessful keeping ONE of them then they were going to get a UFA and they did.

This upcoming season was going to be all about the young dmen we have groomed in our system.

Everything I've read or heard tells me they were only going to sign ONE vet dman and give guys like Butler, Sekera, Weber and possibly even Brennan a shot at filling bigger roles on the team.

Do you have any understanding at all of the nature of his injury? A torn labrum (he actually has two tears) can essentially render an arm useless. Going from one arm to two will improve his play. Its not about being faster necessarily. Its about being able to make good passes and winning physical battles for him. Two things he struggled with last year. Both are much easier to do with two arms instead of just one.
