Lou may choose to keep it a family business, or he might not. Remember when there was speculation he brought Sutter in to groom him for the GM position? (It's a laughable idea now, but still.) No guarantee that Chris will get the job.

Some of it is up to Vanderbeek too. Lou will definitely have input on the selection, but ultimately it's up to the owner to write the checks.

When you put a family member in at that level - with that much responsibility... you're grooming them. If it's just tossing a bone to a family member, you get something like public relations director.

I bet that will sit fine with the owners too as they know Lou will still be an "advisor" and only a phone call away. Lou's already legendary amongst the current GM's; imagine if Chris follows in the footsteps with the same management style and reputation... we can only hope.

Of course things always change... just ask Barry Melrose

I really hope Chris has the same brilliance as his father. Hopefully we won't have to find out for a while.

Nah I don't see that happening.....future goalie coach, I could definately see that

I'm expecting Chris Lamoriello to be the next GM

I agree. Marty will be the goalie coach for however long he wants to be.

Chris will probably get the GM job.

Have we learned nothing from great monarchy in history. The son usually is less then the father and leads to the down fall of the kingdom.

Mini-Steinbrenner won a World Series last year...

Then he will retire, have his number retired, get inducted to the Hall of Fame, and come back as our goalie coach whenever he feels like it.
We'll see about Frazee and whether or not he'll be able to make it. In one of those doom and gloom "What happens after Brodeur" threads that popped up yesterday, I had to point out that every year there are some really awesome UFA goalies popping at more regularity at ages 27/28/29.

First guy that came to mind was Pekka Rinne. He's signed for two more years. Nashville drafted Chet Pickard in the first round in 2008. In a couple years, will they continue their cycle of replacing a pricy goalie with a high upside and cheap youngster? I imagine there'll be other similar situations elsewhere.

Or if St. Louis feels set with Jaroslav Halak, they could look to deal 2008 2nd rounder Jake Allen in a couple years. By then, Allen might be looking like a potential starter.

There'll be different avenues to pursue. While a homegrown option would be awesome, UFA or trade is also a viable route.

Being the owner is a little different than being the GM.

"I care about this organization," Brodeur said. "I lived all my life here. I've seen our fan base grow. I want to make sure it continues. I know I've been a big part of it and now seeing other players coming in, and you see the commitment of Kovy coming in today. For me, it's important. Because hopefully I'll stick around. It doesn't mean I'm going to be a hockey player all the time for the Devils, but I might be around in a different capacity.

Marty definitely will be taking a coaching or front office job when his playing days are over.

Could also see going to LA to try and get Jonathan Quick. He'll still be fairly young and in two years, they'll have Bernier manning the pipes as their #1 guy. They also have a solid prospect who was the Team Canada goalie in the WJC (although his name is escaping me at the moment).

Of course, Cory Schnieder might still be wasting away behind Luongo in Vancouver.

There's no question about it, Marty will be the goalie coach when he retires.
