always been a mara fan. Someone could grab him one the cheap and get a real good 3rd pairing Dman. Plus he grows fantastic beards.

I thought he started off well for us, when we had Markov out and everybody kind of bumped up the ladder, Mara had a defined depth role, and he showed some good versatility and a lot of good intangibles.

But as the season wore on, he sort of got shuffled to the sidelines. Not through any real fault of his. Injuries played a part. I don't think anybody looking for a decent glue-guy bottom-pairing defenseman should be scared off by his numbers or his sidelining in Montreal. He can do more for a team than he ended up doing in Montreal. And if he is cheap, then I'd recommend that any team in need of filling a bottom-pairing/veteran/character/decent/versatile defenseman should rush out and sign him.

Phoenix needs to sign him for cheap. He played his best hockey with the yotes.

Yeah. I can't understand how he put 47 points in 05-06.

17 goals and 32 assists. Wow.

Good guy but the game has passed him by. His durability, endurance and foot speed is questionable. He's a character guy with good leadership and stands up for his mates.

Also he has the worst aim in hockey. He makes Al Iafrate look like a sharp-shooter. He probably pees on the toilet seat.

There was a rumor a month or so back that Detroit was looking at him. They need a #6/7 guy who:

1. Will play a gritty game
2. Will block some shots
3. Will stay at home
4. Doesn't mind getting benched in favor of younger guys (namely Ericsson and Jakub Kindl).

I think if Detroit doesn't end up signing Modano, they'll put about 1M towards a 6/7 Dman. Anyone know what Mara is looking for?

Why wouldnt he mind getting benched especially over players he is probably better than?

Well, inside he minds. But the good thing about Mara is that he's a good soldier. (Or seems to be, I don't know). He'll do whatever the team thinks is good for the team. If he secretly has a different opinion, he doesn't let it show, and just does his best to contribute (or cheerlead) in whatever capacity he is assigned. It's an attitude that teams can appreciate. Maybe sometimes take advantage of a bit. Mara was paid pretty well for it last season, though, I guess we'd have to see how he adapts to being paid a lot less for it. But no indications thus far that it would be a concern, or that it would make a difference.

He's likely one of Lombardi's targets.

I've been saying it all along and I'll stick to it. He'd be a great fit for the Red Wings. It's a type of signing they'd make and he's a type of player they can use to strengthen the bottom-pairing.

Ericsson was crap last year. I can't imagine Ericsson is better than Mara.

He's neither a former Maple Leaf, former Flames or son of a former Flames; therefore no interest.

Hoping the wings go after him if Modano decides to retire, but theyre close to the cap and that beard alone is worth 1.5M

Not to nitpick, but 17 goals and 32 assists is 49 points.

He potted 15 goals that year.

Well, his game changed once he was traded to NYR. I guess the turning point was in his brief stint in Boston, where there was Chara & Brad Stuart (PP guys). Mara always stood out as a team guy.
