Was acquiring Meszaros a good or bad idea?

I'm just curious as to what the poll results will show.

I think it was the dumbest move of the off-season personally.

Good move overall.

Maybe not for the cap, but we have 5 solid defensemen and we only need one, essentially, to cover up for the lack of play for the 6th dman.

The dumbest move this offseason was signing Leighton.

I said mediocre.

The idea was ok but it was poor execution. Everyone wanted to sure up the 3rd pairing, but Homer rushed into it. He moved too quickly, and gave up an asset, for an underachieving, overpaid defenseman.

I think Meszaros will be solid for us, but I can't help but think we could have solidified our 3rd pairing for far cheaper while keeping the 2nd round pick.

No way. Gagne trade by a mile. He couldn't even dump salary without messing up.

That one there is obviously no excuse for, but we couldnt trade anyone else and we needed cap space.

We potentially could have gotten better from free agency and not given up a 2nd.

In addition, we could have survived by just improving the 3rd pairing.

i would have liked to see homer see if 4 mil or less would have landed any of the UFA dmen so we didnt have to give up a 2nd, but i think he has a lot of upside. i wish we had then flipped carle for picks though and had andrej as an upgrade for carle. poorly executed as stated, but i like the idea.

Agreed. We could've signed Michalek for as much as Meszaros or spent another $250,000 and signed Volchenkov.

Bad idea. No reason to have a 4 mil 3rd pairing d-men. There were better choices.

Obviously we have seen worse this offseason and I like Andrej, but we really didn't need him.

I said it was a good idea. A good idea. The execution and terms of said idea were rather flawed, as were most things this off season....as no one can understate.

Getting Meszaros - not bad, not good
Getting Meszaros at $4 million/yr for the next few years - painfully bad
Getting Meszaros at $4 million/yr for the next few years AND giving up a 2nd rounder - BRUTAL

Mediocre.

Weigh the pros and cons

Pro - good defenseman who once looked to be an incredible defenseman, could make a turn around for the better when he's not the #1 anymore.

Con - Contract

I'm going with mediocre. I like Meszaros and have no problem with him. But I don't like the way this was done. It just seemed so rushed. It's time for free agency to begin, why not see what possible bargains you can get on the market before you go looking for trades? I mean it's not like the Lightning had a line of teams on the phone saying "we have to get Meszaros ASAP". This was basically the kick off to a completely rushed off-season. Re-signing Leighton was rushed. Meszaros was rushed. I don't know what the f-bomb happened with the Shelley signing. I like Shelley a lot but for $1.1 million, not so much. If Homer could've just slowed down a little then we would have Gagne along with someone just as good as Meszaros except cheaper. Plus we still would've had that second rounder that we traded for Meszaros. Just slow down, we had over 3 months to get ready for the regular season. There was no reason to rush and get everything done in 3 weeks. I do like the Zherdev signing though.

This is one of the few moves I like ???? But I picked mediocre, LOL

And if Leighton is the starter, his signing is way worse for the FLyers than the Gags trade imo.

Mediocre - we could get similar player during UFA for a little less with out giving up 2nd round pick. Bad timing.

Mez for 2nd round pick is a win trade imo.

If we trade for Meszaros, keep Coburn and Carle, waste cap space on Shelley, O'donnell and Leighton and then trade one of our top forwards for pennies on the dollar, HORRIBLE idea.

If we trade for Meszaros and keep Coburn and Carle, bad idea.

If we trade for Meszaros and then trade Coburn (while his value is low) or let him get offer sheeted, decent idea.

If we trade for Meszaros and then trade Carle (while his value is sky high), good idea.

If we sign a 3rd pairing dman and keep Coburn/Carle, great idea.

If we sign a top FA dman and trade Coburn/Carle, fantastic idea.

.....

Guess which one our GM picked?

Meszaros will probably be a fine player, but this move was by far the worst of the offseason and almost single-handedly cost us Gagne.

It would have been a good idea to gain Meszaros and ditch Carle

I'll reserve final judgement on this one until I see the opening night roster. Right now it looks like a pretty awful deal, though (considering it cost the team Gags and hasn't improved the situation between the pipes).

It was stupid. It was unnecessary. We still have holes elsewhere, and we thinned out our forward group to do it.

It was ****ing dumb.

I'll agree with the good idea/poor execution folks. I'd have much rather he moved Gagne for a d-man (since we ended up losing Gagne anyway). If he moves quickly and makes a Gagne trade when we're not over the cap already he can get a better return; hell why not trade Gagne for Meszaros, we save our 2nd and we aren't stuck with Matt Walker's contract.

I say good move. Meszaros has the potential to be an absolute steal if he plays the way he did when he was in Ottawa.

I'm in the minority, but I think acquiring Meszaros was a good idea. I knew the Flyers were previously interested and were looking at sending Umberger to Ottawa for him, but Ottawa wasn't interested in that deal at the time. With that being said, the Flyers did get the guy they wanted. And with Laviolette and Kevin McCarthy to work with Meszaros, there's no doubt in my mind that he'll be even better this year and that he'll exceed his Ottawa performances.

Of course, I don't like the cap hit, but when he gets back on track, we're going to see one of the better offensive defensemen in the game and we're also going to see someone who is a solid defender (he had 112 hits and blocked 108 shots - in comparison, Coburn had 118 hits and 109 blocked shots). On top of it, we're going to see a healthy Meszaros, something he wasn't in Tampa Bay.
