Apologies. From where I stood I thought the argument wasn't that Gagner outplayed Zajac at 20, Zajac was just breaking in at 20, 21. It was that Gagner has outplayed Zajac's 21 year old season at 18. It really should have been, since that means more.

Also, you're expecting more from Gagner? He's the SECOND LEADING SCORER in his draft year behind Patrick Kane.

And to be fair they could say the same for you.

Then again, none of us really know.

Thanks for the debate.

(Good luck with the Kovalchuck thing, I happen to think the NHL is kidding themselves if they think they can pick and chose the situations where they interfere. It's bush league)
Well it wouldn't be that fair since I'm not a NJ fan. I live on the west coast, and was just looking at this from a hockey standpoint

To put your statistics in context:

Travis Zajac:
(18) 2004-05 U. of North Dakota NCAA 43gp 17g 19a 36pts 16pim
(19) 2005-06 U. of North Dakota NCAA 46gp 18g 29a 47pts 20pim
(19) 2005-06 Albany River Rats AHL 2gp 0g 1a 1pts 2pim
(20) 2006-07 New Jersey Devils NHL 80gp 17g 25a 42pts 16pim
NHL Totals: 80gp 17g 25a 42pts 16pim

(18) 2007-08 Edmonton Oilers NHL 79gp 13g 36a 49pts 23pim
(19) 2008-09 Edmonton Oilers NHL 76gp 16g 25a 41pts 51pim
(20) 2009-10 Edmonton Oilers NHL 68gp 15g 26a 41pts 33pim
NHL Totals: 223gp 44g 87a 131pts 107pim

Zajac's face-off percentage in 2006-2007? 46.9%
Time on ice: 16:02.
Shorthanded time on ice: 3:14.
Average shorthanded per game: 0:02.

Gagner's face-off percentage in 2009-2010? 47.4%
Time on ice: 16:17
Shorthanded time on ice: 6:37
Average shorthanded per game: 0:05.

Seems like they're playing the same role, with the same number of minutes, and have comparable performance. Sam Gagner is playing on a true rebuilding team - any advantage he has with experience is mitigated by the players he's been playing with (started the season with Moreau and Stortini, and still put up comparable numbers to Zajac at the same age.)

Given that Sam Gagner averages third line minutes - his performance to age is impressive.

I'd suggest that he deserves a beer, although he can't legally drink one for four more weeks.
so at 20 there stats were almost identical and Zajac has proven to be a legit 1st line guy, with Gagner it's just potential

And this was Ganger's third year in the league compared to Zajac's rookie year.

And Zajac already is one.

not that identical when you factor in gagner played in less games and put up those same points on a 30th place team that for large stretches of the season couldn't buy a goal collectively.

not sure why everyone likes to overlook the fact that the oilers offence was all around quite useless.... few guys had some good stretches throughout the year (gagner was one of them) but other than penner noone was consistant on that team, and even Penner had a big slump in the middle of the season too.

I'm not trying to discount Zajac here, but as good as he is, he isn't a top tier first line center. He is a good second line center, or a first line center with good wingers to support him. The only way the Oilers are trading Gagner is if it for a top tier first line center. Not a Mike Ribero, Travis Zajac type, but an actual top ender, like a Joe Thornton, Marc Savard, etc. Not that any of those trades are happening either, but that is the only way the Oilers trade Gagner, in a package for a legitimate superstar center. How does anyone know if Zajac would even fit in on the Oilers? He might Horcoff it. Same with Gagner in New Jersey. This trade doesn't make sense for either side, as neither side is getting something that they really want.
