the way i'm looking at the cap numbers i don't see it. just wondering how they would do this if they are $1 mil over the cap with Raymond not signed and Bieksa not traded yet. am i missing something?

They would have to trade/demote SOB and Alberts to get mitchell in. There also is a bit of relief from Burrows.

Any chance that Salo was bitten on the ankle by a European brown adder again?

According to Gillis the surgeon told him that Burrows will be ready for training camp.

Unlikely either O'Brien or Alberts would make it through waivers to be sent down.

All those bieksa lovers are going to think this is good news, but I am sorry.

This is just terrible news, the injury is one thing, but I promise bieksa will bite us in the ass again in the playoff's, if he is on this team next year.

I don't care if you guys don't agree with me, but I am 100% in my opinion, that bieksa will find some ****ing way to screw this season up.

You first have to be cap compliant because the salary of an injured player counts - all you get is an exception to exceed the cap by the amount a replacement player or players would put you over.

****.

Plus it was looking like we could get a bidding war going for Bieksa and get some kind of legitimate return; so we can scratch the idea of swapping him for that banging forward we need for the third line. All in all, just terrible ****ing news.

right, which is exactly why im having trouble figuring out all these speculations about getting extra players without any mention anyone else getting traded. i mean trade Bieksa which covers Raymond's salary. to get anyone else you gotta make more trades because Bieksa trade will not free up any extra room, am i wrong?

Trading Alberts and SOB would free up 2.7 million if I'm correct. Sign Mitchell to a 2 million deal + bonus for games played that can be deferred to next season.

Edit...nevermind. That would kill our depth on defense.

Interesting news for sure. I've always been an advocate of keeping Bieksa and moving Salo, but this kind of throws a wrench into things.

Sammy's given us some good highlights but I think it's definately time to move on from this ongoing situation. I wonder if this is something that he'll consider retiring from.

Looks like this team will be retaining its swagger and grit after all! (KB3)

Get well, Salo, and great job once again, Gillis! (yeah, it was an accident, alright)

Grrr.... what does this do to Bieksa now?

All this anticipated waiting for a expected Bieksa trade is now gone.

Is this Salo's 39th or 40th injury? Props to him for setting the record for most injuries by a Canuck.

It doesn't really do much worth **** for us in terms of cap savings unless another player goes down with injury by the time that Salo is ready to go (which sounds like it'll be somewhere between late November and late January).

LTIR basically just gives you room to bring in a replacement but once that player is healthy you got to get under the maximum daily cap. You can do that by trading someone at that point, waiving someone at that point or putting another player on LTIR (which is what the Canucks did last season with Demitra on LTIR first, then Bieksa then Mitchell to end the season).

Interesting enough we could potentially keep Bieksa around to start the season and then trade him a month or two into the season if he's able to increase his value. Unfortunately once the season starts it's pretty hard to make deals so essentially it would be a salary dump by at least we'd get some production out of Bieksa for a certain portion of the season before trading him away.

I have a feeling he will retire after this season, or he will play one more season.

I honestly rather still trade Bieksa and sign a FA D-man if we can find one. Hell, trade Bieksa for a cheaper D-man or something.

Wasn't there already a news article last year where Salo stated that 2010-2011 would be his last season before retirement?

The Sami Salo injury graphic pre-2010:

Puck Daddy (Greg Wyshynski) has a great headline:

Canucks checking on Salo injury; in other news, water still wet and has this to say:
Quote:
Usually, a player prone to injury will be labeled "oft-injured" in a story like this, but simply publishing the name "Sami Salo" serves as a worthy synonym. In his 11 NHL seasons, he's played less than 70 games in nine of them. Again, no word if the report is accurate yet; but frankly, it would have been a bigger story had he been completely healthy heading into camp.
...
Ah, the perils of floor hockey. Glad we hung up the plastic stick back in middle school. Incidentally, we've been told the Finnish refer to the game as "Ball Hockey," which makes this the most painfully ironic story of the day, given recent Salo injury history.

A guy where I work had an achille's tear and it took him well over 6 months to fully recover after the surgery to repair it.

You know that Gillis signed Joel Perrault to a one way contract less than 3 hours into free agency right?
