Gillis has nothing to do with whether or not he is or isn't an RFA, the CBA does. And there are many posters on this board with enough knowledge of the CBA to be able to declare that he will be an RFA.

Wow, I guess Raymond really did want to stay a Canuck because this deal is definitely BELOW what he would have received through arbitration based on the rewards we've seen thus far; Gillis continues to pump the 'win now' mentality with the players getting guys to sign below market value to stay here.

This gives us a lot more cap maneuverability then I'd predicted; great news overall!

Great Job All Around..

The best part is after thi contract is over Raymond will be an RFA and not a UFA..and by then Samuelssons contract will come off the books.

Gillis is a whiz!

Nice deal.

low enough that dumping Bieksa, SOB, and Alberts could free up around 2 - 2.5 million for Mitchell.

It's a good deal for both parties. The Canucks get two years of Raymond at slightly below market value, and Mason Raymond becomes an unrestricted free agent at 27.

There was some give and take from both sides.

Lol, to be fair I believe the error originated with Team 1040 who reported Raymond would be an UFA after this contract. Poor reporting yet again from our locals. I'm sure Wetcoaster has already emailed them.

Willie Mitchell will have to take a major cut from last season if he wants a job in the NHL next season. Not many teams will want to take a risk on him at more than $2 million. Also...

Bieksa, Alberts and Hordichuk = $5.525 million > Bieksa, O'Brien and Alberts = $6.35 million

There are other guys who can be waived if necessary. I think Shane O'Brien is a keeper.

I don't think filing for arbitration was a ploy by his agent. In a way, it demonstyrated Raymond's first priority was to play for the Canucks. No offer sheets and almost no chance he'd play elsewhere...unless it was a walk-away style award.

We may now return to our bregularly scheduled program, Obsessing Over Bieksa.

Botchford lists the two sides arbitration comparables assuming it went through....

Barry....

Obviously Barry wasn't particularly confident in his case here. Zajac? He's more of a Kesler comparable then a Raymond comparable and Ryan Clowe is just over-paid in my opinion.

And the answer is: Because he'll still be RFA after 2 years.

Gotta say, Gillis seems to know all the little screws to get players re-signed at good numbers.
Haha, for all the talk that hiring a former agent as GM would be a bad thing (not part of the boys' club, blah-blah) there does seem to be this upside that he knows what goes on in a player's and agent's heads when they're staring across the table at a GM.

Love the deal, I was hoping for $2.75M as a fair amount, was prepared for $3M, but this plus a two-year security is good for the Canucks, and fair enough to Raymond that he won't be bitter.

If we could get cap relief, I wouldn't mind holding on to Bieksa until we get a better sense of Salo's future, but even if we do let Bieksa go, neither he nor Salo were in our top-four anyway, and we have three guys in Alberts, O'Brien and Rome who can be bottom pairing guys.

Edler - Hamhuis
Erhoff - Ballard
O'Brien - Alberts
Rome

That's not weak at all, and with our forwards and goaltending, we're solid. Would be nice to have a right-hander in there, but if Hamhuis and Ballard were honest about being able to play both sides, we don't have too much to worry about.

Great contract by the Nucks. Wish we could have gotten a longer term, but very unlikely Raymond would go for that.

This is awesome!

I agree with SOB. Played great last year and hopefully can do something similar this year. In a perfect world we find a way to keep Bieksa too because I really think he's going to have a bounce back year. He's played great before, we've all seen it. But something has to give, one or both of these two will be gone, and I will be sad.

A link to a Gillis confirmation of this would be awesome, otherwise it's just speculation (and I don't need HF help to generate speculation ).

Thanks.

Why does Gillis need to confirm details of the CBA?

Cool, thanks for confirming it's HF speculation that Gillis and Raymond wanted a deal that ended one season before he goes UFA.

Got it, thanks.

Gilman on 1040 talking about this deal.

- Confirms last minute deal. Pretty much confirms the details written by Botch.

- Describes Raymond's current status as a player, sees him as "trending upwards".

- Raymond's "range" of potential is high.

- Talks about how "every player knows what every other player earns" due to full disclosure of salary terms amongst NHL players. Canucks players have "worked" with the Canucks to sign for reasonable deals - says that they like playing here.

- Vancouver and everything it has to offer is a major consideration for these FAs.

- Does Raymond have 40 goal potential? "He has the attributes." Has worked extensively with Glenn Carnegie.

- Is there concern about his production towards the end of the regular season/playoffs? "We did a good job in managing fatigue. Still, the travel took its toll on all of our players."

- "We'd like to think that we're close."

- Update on Salo: Still waiting for the final evaluation from the doctors. Surgery yet? "No comment."

- "We knew historically here in Vancouver that dmen have gone down from injury." Cites last years injury problems on the d-line. "We're sitting with 9 d-men at the moment ... some chairs may be moved around." (Author's note: Gilman essentially reiterates the company line here. Gillis may as well have been interviewed and we'd have nothing to talk about.)

- "Mike Gillis has been a sought-out commodity around the NHL ... knowing that we have 9 good NHL d-men. Many GMs want to take one off our hands. We're going slow ... waiting it out and seeing what's out there."

(Author's 2nd Note: Almost none of this is verbatim.)
