Cool, thanks for confirming it's HF speculation that Gillis and Raymond wanted a deal that ended one season before he goes UFA.
Got it, thanks.
Perhaps you should ask Gillis instead of HF then?
Good value for the Canucks. Most if not all the core guys are locked up for the next few years. How many core guys are going to be free agents in the next year or two? I think only Ehrhoff and Raymond.

how about just connecting the dots, rather than expecting the GM to spell everything out for you?
Raymond hits UFA status in 3 yrs, and signed him to a 2yr contract... makes sense to me... similar to what he did with Bernier. He never actually came out and said that he signed Bernier to 2 yrs last season, just so he would get to RFA status instead of UFA status, but, if you connect the dots, it makes sense, doesn't it?
if you're expecting Gillis to come out and break down the motivation behind all his moves, you're going to be disappointed... it's not his job to do so.
In fact, have we EVER from any GM that has signed any contract, give reasoning behind the term they give the players? I know Gillis had to justify Luongo's term, being 12 years, but did he tell us why Burrows got 4yrs? or Samuelsson 3yrs, or the Sedins signed for 5, or Kesler to 6?
do we ever get reasoning on term from any GM, when it's not an outrageous contract that required that reasoning, as was the case with Luongo?
Just reposting this so it doesn't get lost in the shuffle, as I'm sure someone will ask for it:
Quote:
Gilman on 1040 talking about this deal.
- Confirms that this was a last minute deal. Pretty much confirms the details written by Botch.
- Describes Raymond's current status as a player, sees him as "trending upwards".
- Raymond's range of salaries was large, so this was taken into account (i.e. worked towards the Canucks' favor).
- Talks about how "every player knows what every other player earns" due to full disclosure of salary terms amongst NHL players. Canucks players have "worked" with the Canucks to sign for reasonable deals - says that they like playing here.
- Vancouver and everything it has to offer is a major consideration for these FAs.
- Does Raymond have 40 goal potential? "He has the attributes." Has worked extensively with Glenn Carnegie.
- Is there concern about his production towards the end of the regular season/playoffs? "We did a good job in managing fatigue. Still, the travel took its toll on all of our players."
- "We'd like to think that we're close."
- Update on Salo: Still waiting for the final evaluation from the doctors. Surgery yet? "No comment."
- "We knew historically here in Vancouver that dmen have gone down from injury." Cites last years injury problems on the d-line. "We're sitting with 9 d-men at the moment ... some chairs may be moved around." (Author's note: Gilman essentially reiterates the company line here. Gillis may as well have been interviewed and we'd have nothing to talk about.)
- "Mike Gillis has been a sought-out commodity around the NHL ... knowing that we have 9 good NHL d-men. Many GMs want to take one off our hands. We're going slow ... waiting it out and seeing what's out there."
(Author's 2nd Note: Almost none of this is verbatim.)
So we are $-2,658,333 over the cap according to Cap Geek. Everyone assumes that the sacrificial lamb will be Bieska, and that certainly seems to be the case.
This signing is fantastic in terms of controlling the cap, as our many others.
However, this doesn't include Hodgson, Oreskovich, Schroeder or any of the other hopefuls. Nor does it include WIllie MItchell.
The only additional part of the roster that can be trimmed appears to be Hordichuk and Perreault ... so we are going to be tight against the cap and probably have to move at least one decent player in addition to Bieska.
Thank you Raymond for wanting to play here, and thank you to Burrows for setting the standard!
(The above numbers apply for when Salo and Burrows return ...)

Reason: Salo comments
Someone hasn't been paying attention in class again.
Yeah, I was incorrect. Thanks for pointing it out, though
I should no better than to rely on the House Radio station to actually know anything about the CBA. Lesson learned. Or, I suppose I could actually read the thread prior to responding.

Price seems reasonable. Why only 2 years? Is he UFA at the end of this contract?

Good god Dado! It is quite obvious there was two questions in your first post, and it was quite obvious I was responding to the second one. Stop wasting my time. The fact is had you read the thread (a whopping one and a half pages at the time) you would not have had to ask your second question. Then you try and attack me after I point this out? Good god Dado.
After seeing JP Barry throw out 4M as a number, this is a pleasant surprise. However, it is in line with what most people were expecting in their armchair lineups before MacArthur/Barry.
If Raymond plays like last year this is a good deal, If he steps it up to the next level then this is an outstanding deal.
It does appear that the Canucks have created an environment which is very attractive to players and which has been critical in both getting and retaining players at good cap prices. Given the travel and often difficult schedule this is a major accomplishment
Raymond should have a stepped up role on the team, seeing more PK time, and more use on the PP. I believe he has clearly established himself as a top 6 player.
Overall this move greatly relieves much of the cap apprehensions but does make you wonder if Hodgson, given his salary and perhaps lack of appropriateness and readiness for a third line winger position does, in fact, start in the minors. Not the worst thing that could happen.

IIRC, the bonus cushion is in effect. So effectively, Hodgson is making only $850K and likely in a role where his bonuses will not be met, which doesn't matter until next year. I don't see how this move (salary wise) will force him into the minors.
On the Raymond signing, just as i had wished, that it would be settled before the hearing. A lot lower than i was expecting. to MG
Hell yah great deal! Was pretty worried about the Raymond deal and what he could get. This is pretty much best case scenario.
Now if Gillis can add 2 forwards and dump Bieksa I'll be very happy.
We only really need 1 bottom 6 forward IMO. I'm fine with a 3rd line of Hodgson - Malhotra - Hansen. Add 1 legit very good 4th liner (someone like Asham) and you have to figure 2 of the glut of 4th liners we have can be good enough to fill the rest.
Ideal world we bring in 2 more bottom 6, but we only really need 1.
