Well, that's Lombardi's MO - only do what's popular.

So this is basically a taller version of Frolov that shoots more?

Whatever, I'll take it. It is a step in the right direction.

Yeah, he's always been about pleasing the fans... he's not calculative about his hockey moves at all....

That's Dean keeping his options open. I would have thought a two year deal, but it's ok. It's not going to be more than $2.5M is my guess.

The thing is, if he plays well for one year, we'll be wishing we signed him for longer as he'll either get a much larger paycheck or jet. Not really sure if I like that.

However a one year deal was probably what the player wanted and nothing could be done about that.

He was one of the worst player in the playoff for PIT.

That, or Dean is just waiting for the next dynamic Russian UFA LW next year.

I'm glad its a one-year deal. I want some help now, but have no interest in keeping him around long term.

1 year deal.

If it were long term, he'd be a bad option-- but as a Stop gap it'll be good for the Kings.

And from TheFourthPeriod twitter:

I dont see LA being done with that deal. Poni's solid and should rebound in LA, but the Kings are still looking for another top-line forward

I am only guessing, but I would think Lombardi is just fine with him being on a one year deal, and it is quite possible the Kings insisted on it. This guy is one of Deano's famous placeholders.

As a Penguins fan, I'm actually disappointed that we couldn't have re-signed him. His crappy tenure as a Penguin was a fluke in my estimation. He's going to have a big bounce back. Great signing by the Kings.

And Eklund is tweeting this:

make no mistake about it, the Poni signing this is is NOT the Kings "big" splash.

Exactly. Poni is 30 and is who he is. He is not going to 'break out' in LA. We needed a body to play LW. We may not next year at this time. This gives DL some flexibility. Very good 'Moneyball' signing.

I happy with this signing! Poni will replace Fro spot. and if the Kings do in fact sign Sutton. I'm okay with this off-season. Of course losing on out Kovy was a major blow after it appear he was coming here. but you know what... At the end of the day. The Devils shot themselves in the foot. (just my opinion). So it is what it is.

If Sutton will be in fact a King. Then we didn't make any major improvements this off-season via trade/free agency. But we replaced what we lost with equally talented players, and again like last season we can count an improved versions of Kopitar, Doughty, Johnson, and Simmonds. I also think Scheen will make the team this year along either Voynov or Hickey.

And then there is our goaltending which will be SICK!!! We have two number NHL goalies, and don't think Bernier is not, because he is. I saw him play in person about 20 times last season (both in Manchester and LA) and this kid is the real deal.

Nice goal from Ponikarovsky where he uses his size, speed and reach to rush the puck to the net, albeit against Corvo. Notice how Gleason bounces off of him as well. Strong like bull!

I'm cool with it. LW depth to replace Frolov once it was a for sure that we couldn't get him back. I don;t mind the one year deal. What's the worst that happens? He ***** the bed this year and is off the books?

I'd pick Frolov over Ponikarovsky every day of the week, but it's better than nothing.

You're going to be surprised. IMO, Poni is one of the most underrated players in the NHL. Though I think the folks here that are expecting a $2M cap hit are being unrealistic. I cant see him getting less than $3.5M.

Another from TheFourthPeriod:

Poni's a 2nd line player and will come in handy for LA. He's also a really good guy. Fans should like him. Kings still want top-line guy tho

It's not really a "popular move" as to saving face especially to our season ticket holders.
