Canucks Re-Sign F Mario Bliznak to 1-Year, $550,000 Deal (Two-Way)

Quote:
Talent Analysis

He plays a hard-working style that uses his solid speed and acceleration to get to opposing puck carriers quickly. His defensive play and commitment to his own end of the ice is something that scouts picked up on at the U18s. He’s not a flashy player, but has adequate puck-handling skills for his age and is a decent, although unspectacular, shooter. His vision and offensive hockey sense are both areas of concern. The reality of the matter is Bliznak is and will always be a defensively-minded player with limited potential to contribute on the scoresheet.

Future

Bliznak should become a serviceable third or fourth liner.

Teams are allowed to have up to 50 NHL contracts signed. Unless they are on the Canucks active (usually 22 or 23 man) roster, they do not count against the cap. Players that are likely Moose-bound like Tambellini, Perreault, Bliznak etc do not count against the cap unless they are playing on the Canucks.

I'm aware. Just frustration from not knowing how this is all going to work out.

But what if Gillis finally lost it and it's a one-way contract?

It'll obviously be a two-way

Anyway, I like Bliznak's game, he could be a good 4th line C in the future. But for now, you never can have too much depth.

It should be a fun training camp. Lots of competition for the bottom 6.

Bieksa, Alberts and Hordichuk = Gone

That's over $5 million off the salary cap.

Contract #48

Good deal, nothing spectacular but more competition for the fourth line.

I have a hunch he'll get a significant number of games in with the big club this season, perhaps even from opening night on. That's not an educated guess -- I've hardly seen him play -- so I invite those who've seen more of the Moose to explain why I'm wrong.

My thinking is that Bliznak played a certain role, defensive centre, with the Giants and the Moose, and he excelled at it, and when it comes down to it that experience will mean he'll be better in his own end than the alternatives: Bolduc, Rypien, etc. Those others may have strengths Bliznak doesn't have, but they're all trying to learn a new skill set. I'd be happier seeing Bliznak on the ice when the opposition manages to get its first line out against our fourth.

Another center? Wow, we're collecting them eh. With our depth with our other recent acquisitions and re-acquisitions, I have him pegged for the Moose as a call up. Cool though, liked him last season.

Wouldn't count on all 3. Obviously someobody's going but Hordi only saves 250,000 if replaced by a Min. contract player, Alberts 600k. Gillis seems to like to carry 8 d-men, so that would mean only 1 D moved. Maybe if Sweatt or somobedy plays their way onto the roster in camp....or they sign Weaver or Morisson (or someone else) at a good number....then 2 of the current guys are gone. Probably Bieksa & Alberts as you said.

I'm not sure Bliznak is ready for next season for a full time gig in the Show, but as an injury call up I like him.

what's his waiver status? and Bolduc's, while your at it.

Bliznak - I have a good feeling about. I don't entirely buy the argument that to be an NHLer of any kind, you need to put up points in the AHL. I'd like to see the Canucks give him the first 10 games of the regular season (pre-season doesn't mean much) as 4th line center to see if he has what it takes? Nothing to lose really and after 10 games, we'll know. I think we already know that Bolduc lacks the poise (and is always injured) and Rypien is simply weak defensively (and dreadful on the pk).

Uhhhhhhh, we'd have those ten games to lose. Certainly no bottom six guy has a spot reserved even if it is for ten games.

We'll put on the player that showed he's the best for the position during training camp and through those meaningless pre-season games.

I'm glad Bliznak got resigned. He has an awesome name... That's reason enough... Right?

And I can't believe outside99 is writing off Bolduc due to two injuries. Bolduc has showed a good deal of promise.

that's given me a great idea for cap evasion.

pay marginal players 1-way deals while they are NHLers then get them to sign supercheap NHL deals when they are ready (ie pay in advance while its cap free).

I believe the NHL minimum salary is $500,000. Jeff Tambellini signed a one-year deal for that amount.

I'm pretty sure the owner isn't thrilled with paying hundreds of thousands more to borderline NHL players if he doesn't have to.

Bliznak has played 2 NHL games and has only 2 professional seasons, so he is exempt from wiavers.

Bolduc has only 22 NHL games played, and he was 20 when he signed his first contract, so based on professional seasons played, Bolduc would have to clear waivers.
