Brian Pothier's Waiver draft exemption...

He doesn't show up on the protected list or the exposed list for the Ottawa senators, but I can't seem to figure out how he's exempt.

He's 26 years old (born April 15, 1977), and has played 50 NHL games over three seasons.

By the rules as far as I can figure say he needs to be protected. Did the sens make a mistake, or am I not understanding the rule properly.

help please.

Pothier was first signed to an NHL contract I believe when he was 23 years old. That would mean that to be eligible for the waiver draft he would've had to have played more then 60 NHL games and have been signed more than 3 years ago including this waiver draft. Pothier has reached neither as far as I know.

Years from
Age NHL Signing NHL Games Played*
18 5 or 160
19 4 or 160
20 3 or 160
21 3 or 80
22 3 or 70
23 3 or 60
24 2 or 60
25+ 1 or --

* "NHL games played" includes all regular-season and playoff games. A skater who plays in 11 or more NHL games as a 18- or 19-year-old will have his exemption reduced from five and four years, respectively, to three years. A goaltender who plays in 11 or more NHL games as an 18- or 19-year-old will have his exemption reduced from six and five years, respectively, to four years.

As far as I can tell Pothier should have been protected. He is 26 years old and signed a NHL contract three years ago.

As far as I can tell Pothier should have been protected. He is 26 years old and signed a NHL contract three years ago.
But he signed the contract at 23 years old. That means on the list above, the line that says 23, means he would have to play 60 NHL games or be entering his 4th NHL campaign which includes the upcoming waiver draft, he is finishing his 3rd(after the waiver draft is over he'll be entering his 4th season). Pothier is exempt for both these reason.
