Value of JJ

Hey guys, back again..still can't post in Trade Rumors and FA section, sooo..I have a question for you.

As I came over here, I saw the injury report on Matt Greene, which might skew the results of the question. So, I would assume if this does happen, it would be after he gets back, but bare with me.

:

Dustin Penner+

:

Jack Johnson

LA gets their top line LWer on a good contract.

In my opinon, the Oilers need a top pairing shutdown D. JJ would fill that role, and play with his american buddy, Whitney. JJ is young enough to fit into the rebuild pretty well.

Not sure what the "+" would be in this deal. But, along with the "+" the Oilers could send over Souray for free. He could fill a spot on your bottom 4 somewhere.

Keep in mind our rebuild for the "+".

I'm not sure exactly what JJ's value is. I'm curious as to what the "+" would have to be to entice the kings into biting.

So..

How important is JJ to LA?
Would you see him being dealt for the right price?
How much would the Oilers need to add?
Would LA want Souray?

Thanks

If JJ was traded, it would probably be trade deadline. Jack turned it on during the Olympics and after so we are pretty high on him if he can keep improving. I suppose if he flounders this yr, they might move him instead of extending him...but don't want to trade him for Penner.

Uh oh, I have a feeling another of my threads is about to crash.

I was under the impression that LA fans were interested in Penner.

Some think he's a good fit, others think he's a lazy fat *******.

I definitely agree with that. I used to be a Penner hater, but last season turned me around.

He came to camp in shape, and competed like he wanted to be there. He seemed to keep his compete level up most of the season too, minus a few stints.

Staying competitive and playing like he wanted to be there is pretty impressive to me, considering his situation. Playing with less than favorable linemates on a bad team didn't get him down.

If anything, going to a better team and playing with someone like Kopitar could only increase that compete level.

Just my 2 cents.

Is Edmonton trying to get rid of Penner?

Not really. Without him we're only down to one bonafide scorer in Hemsky. So, the move wouldn't be favorable exactly.

It's definitely a rebuild move. Move Penner while his value is highest and see how the season goes.

If the rookies light it up, the Oilers have a decent season. If they bust, we get a lottery pick.

Tambellini will have to address defense eventually in the rebuild. Right now we're pretty thin on Dman prospects or NHL ready Dmen.

So, either he deals someone for some assets, or just bombs and hopes for Larsson.

Another interesting thing to talk about might be:

Penner

for

Teubert+

I've been hearing a lot of talk of how Teubert's development is going slower than expected, but do you think he could be a top pairing Dman within a couple years?

I don't ever see Teubert as a top pairing guy. I think a Penner for Teubert deal is way more likely than Penner for JMFJ

Depending on the + I'd do this. I, too, think Teub is far from ready, even physically 195lbs for a tough physical Dman won't go too well in the NHL.

Not interested in trading away Johnson at this point. At worst he's a good 2nd pairing guy, and we don't really know how good he could be.

Not sure why you're targeting Teubert other than perhaps a Regina connection to Eberle. If you have room on the roster to keep him in Edmonton, you should be targeting Voinov who is more NHL-ready. There are signs that point to Voinov going back to Russia if he doesn't make the Kings roster out of camp.

If that is the case then he's a perishable good, and would be a better fit going someplace where he has a better chance of making the team out of camp. On the Kings he'd be competing with Hickey, Drewiske, Muzzin, Martinez, and Fransson for one, maybe two slots. Who would he have to beat out on the Oil? He's a better prospect than Petry, and I would think that Petry needs a full season in Springfield anyways. Strudwick? Chorney?

How would you feel about Voinov + Zatkoff/Jones? (either of Zatkoff/Jones would push Roy as the top netminder in the system)

Great points. Voinov would have a great chance of making the team in Edmonton, thus giving them an NHL-ready D-man.

Jack Johnson is the clear cut #2 dman on the Kings. The Kings haven't had a young defensive tandem this good since they had Blake and Zhitnik back in 1993, and the tandem of Doughty and Johnson has the potential to be significantly better than that duo. I don't think you'll see the Kings trading Jack Johnson any time soon unless he wants out or if they are unable to come to terms on a contract. Until then, he will remain in a Kings uniform.

I don't think Penner is the type of LW the Kings need now unless they lost Smyth and Penner replaced him. The Kings need more speed and a high quality shot from the wings, and Penner is not that type of player.
