This is true, but the fact that they may be competing for the same spot during training camp makes comparing them relevant, albeit difficult.

If it does come down to the one or the other I expect Salmela wins it just because we need his skillset more.

This type of thing is what I implied... They can't 'compete'.

I expect Fraser to get traded before the season starts anyway. He's young, has clear potential, and he's making league minimum on a one year deal. That's not a bad asset. Maybe we'll dangle him to entice someone to help us clear space.

Here's how the conversation should go:

Lou - How about Rolston and Fraser for a 2nd round pick and a minor league scrub of your choice? Look at this this way, Fraser is a 500k defenseman who would be making $2M if he were older, so with that savings, think of it as if Rolston's only making $3.5M. No? Okay, how about we throw in a years supply of Omaha Steak?

And he actually looked pretty good before the hit vs Philthy.

I'd like to see a bit more of him next season even if he is our 7.

I think once we see what we have with our prospects, Lou will clean house if needed. For now, it's not a bad thing to have strong competition for a few spots on the back-end.

TG is speculating and could be way off, but Salmela may not make camp.

It appears unlikely that Salmela will be ready for the start of the 2010-11 regular season. Although there is no word yet from the Devils on Salmela’s recovery time, Montreal’s Andrei Markov—as a comparison—is expected to miss six months after having surgery a week ago to repair a torn ACL.

Anybody want Dean back as 4th line Center? Do you think Sestito's ready to be our full time 4th line center?

Our 4th line will get true 4th line minutes next year. Whether it's Sestito or McAmmond, I could care less. I like Deano though.

Deaner waned considerably toward the back half of last season and was invisible in the (brief) playoffs.

Liked the guy, but DO. NOT. WANT.

Whether Sestito is the guy or Henrique, rather have some young blood.

And looooooooved Timmy's energy when he was up with the team.

PL3/Pelley - Sestito/Pelley - Sharky/Pelley should be able to get 'er done as our 10-13 forwards.

That sucks for him. He definitely had a good shot of making the team if he was healthy. Now, by the time he heals and is ready to play, another young defenceman may have cemented a spot in the lineup.

I don't think we need McAmmond back. A rookie can fill that fourth line spot just as easily. He definitely disappeared toward the end of the season. I think Sestito is ready. Perhaps even Henrique makes it.

After hearing about Salmela, I hate Jeff Carter even MORE now than ever...He has just about entered Carcillo-status over here....

And as far as Dean-o goes, anyone think that had he played sparingly and was saved for the Playoffs, he would NOT have "faded"?

We don't need Dean but I wouldn't be upset if we got him back at a reasonable price for another year....

After hearing what? That he might not make camp? That has nothing to do with the hit from Carter. He hurt his knee playing for Finland after the season.

The way Vancouver is talking, Fraser+pick could actually land us Bieksa. They want "Prospect+Pick" but I'm sure a league minimum NHL ready defenseman would be just as good.

Problem is we are already in cap hell to begin with. I would be very disappointed if we let our biggest need get away at such a cheap price.

Once again it seems like Kovy is the answer as opposed to fixing what we already know is wrong with the team.

I don't see Bieksa getting moved for anything but quality now that Salo is out indefinitely.

They will still need to clear cap at some point. Better to do it now than to be under the gun later.

Too many NTC's on that team. He's really the only guy with value that they can move to get under the cap.

Quality doesn't have to necessarily equal money in this case. I think they'd want someone that can do more than Fraser especially since they already have O'Brien and Alberts. But it probably doesn't matter, the Devils can't fit Bieksa without moving their own cap problems first.
