The Canadiens will make the playoffs next year

I know that this is way early but, what the heck.

In the site mynhldraft.com, whoever organizes those lists has Montreal taking the 17th pick in the 2011 draft.

That means that the Canadiens will finish in the playoffs, 7th in the Eastern Conference ahead of Sabres (8th with the 15th pick).

(By the way, Ottawa won't make to the post-season and neither will Toronto but the Leafs will improve to the point that the Bruins will get the 9th overall pick. The Panthers will finish 15th.)

http://www.mynhldraft.com/NHL-Mock-Draft/

Now, I don't know how this guy (or these guys) get these figures aside from conjecture but, as a dream, it sure looks good.

According to their projected draft order, the Eastern Conference teams that will make the playoffs are, in order:

1. Washington
2. Pittsburgh
3. Boston
4. Philadelphia
5. New Jersey
6. Tampa Bay
7. Montreal
8. Buffalo

With this 'final standings' to work from, interesting questions are:

1. Will the Canadiens get the better of the Penguins again?
2. Will the Flyers be Devil killers again like last year?
3. Are you glad that the Canadiens won't meet the Flyers in the 1st round?
4. Will Steve, Vincent, Martin & co. be able to get by the Bruins with Rask and his gang?
5. How many games will it take the Caps to take out the Sabres?

Again, it's early for this kind of guess work but why not? Could be fun.

For me, the answers are:

1. I'd be pleasantly surprised.
2. Yes.
3. YES!!!!
4. Likely.
5. five.

Division winners are seeded 1-2-3, so those standings don't quite hold. If those are the standings point-wise, you'd get:

1. X - Washington
2. X - Pittsburgh
3. X - Boston
4. Philadelphia
5. New Jersey
6. Tampa Bay
7. Montreal
8. Buffalo

Looks like a reasonable prediction. I also think Tampa *could* have a good team this year, though it will be interesting to see how it plays out.

I think the Habs could give the Pens a good run again.
Boston would play Tampa, and I'd see the B's taking that one.
New Jersey - Philadelphia could be a great series, especially if Kovalchuk ends up a Devil.

Anyway, of course, way too early for these kinds of things, but all I know is... I CAN'T WAIT FOR TRAINING CAMP TO START!

Ooooops... I forgot. I'll correct the order and change my questions to fit the 'new' situation.

I don't understand why people are ranking boston so high up there. Is seguin so good that he'll solve their offensive woes?

Not to mention that they still have to find a way to fit him under the cap, he is still un-signed.

He'll be like.. 3mil with rookie bonuses I figure? And they're still looking to dump savard, which I still don't understand.

Bozak is 3.75m on the cap... No way Seguin comes below that.

How the hell is Bozak 3.75 mil on the cap? Can someone look this up?

Something close to that I would agree. Stamkos has a 3.75 cap hit, but he was a first overall. I would guess somewhere between 3 million and 3.5. I would imagine Sturm is the one to get moved, or Ryder I suppose as well. They have to move someone; and considering their poor defensive depth, it has to be a forward.

Different situations, Seguin is a drafted rookie on an ELC, Bozak came from college as an overager.

He is that high because a reported 20 teams were after him, Toronto needed to offer him an insane package of bonuses to be able to get him to sign.

Its legit, that is his cap-hit, but not necessarily his salary, he still has to hit his bonuses to get that money.

Well, we already know Seguin is gonna be much better than Subban and will have a bigger impact in his rookie season.

It's sacriligeous to even think that Subban might have an impact next season, or just plainly consider it. No no no. Considering his impact is something akin to calling him Jesus H Christ.

But Seguin? Ha! No doubt, at all.

It will be a dogfight for the Habs to finish in 7th. Tampa looks like they have improved on the ice and behind the bench, laugh all you want but the Leafs look better, too. Who knows what the Rangers will be like and Atlanta is a real wild card.

The question is, are the Habs more like the team that backed into the playoffs or the team that surprised everyone in the post season. Where does our improvement come from?

Maybe we should start a thread of who will be going at the trade deadline.

This upcoming year will all be on Martin, whether good or bad.

Seguin is a center though, and there's no way he beats out Savard/Krejci/Bergeron. I doubt Boston would keep him up only to play him on the 4th line, so the options are simple.
The most likely one is that he's moved to the wing so he can fill a top 6 role.
Trade Savard, or he simply won't play here.

Tampa has improved on paper. Nobody knows just how well they will perform together. They are a wild card.
Rangers still have no center.
Leafs have huge holes on offense as well and if they want to play without a system like last season, they'll have a real hard time again.
Atlanta is a wild card?..I think they'll need to be extremely lucky to make the POs. I like Peverley but him and Antropov can't pull this team. Byfuglien will be useless there and Kane is still learning.
Let's just say that if Atlanta is in a race with us at the end of the year, then something went horribly wrong for us during the season.

The most likely one is what I am thinking. Although, I could see him not even making the team and spending one more year in junior, I don't think he is a shoe-in, contrary to what most people believe.

Move him to wing, trade Ryder or Sturm and they can squeeze under the cap.

Horton and Seguin added to their Savard, Bergeron, Sturm, Wheeler, Krejci, Lucic, and Ryder/Recchi is a solid top 9 on paper. Sure injuries can occur but on paper imo they're the team to beat in the Northeast.

I would include Gauthier as well for the simple fact that he traded Halak over Price. If Price plays well then all will be forgiven. But if Price and Eller suck it up and Halak is killing in St-Louis, Gauthier will be run out of town.
