Bowman won't walk away IMO

In a Trade we could get a pick in return with this Cap hit.

Maybe Oilers and Caps are interested (Said a guy on the Hawks Board)

The Hawks supposedly offered him a 3 year contract with a ~$2.66 mil cap hit so i'd guess they can squeeze to $2.75 million.
I am genuinely excited to see what the Sedins will do to that line, when Vancouver has last change. That's some pretty shoddy depth compared to last year.

48 hours. I would expect a decision by the end of the day, though

I predict they won't walk away from that. I wish they would. I'd rather have Turco at 1.5.

So the arbitrator agreed Niemi's comparable to Halak then? Sounds like the Hawks rep didn't do a very good job.

I feel sorry for the Blackhawks - The irony is Campbell is making more then Keith and Seabrook - they should sign him

Link at ESPN Chicago:
An arbitrator set Chicago Blackhawks goaltender Antti Niemi's salary at $2.75 million on Saturday, according to a source.

Within 48 hours of the decision, the Hawks can walk away and make Niemi an unrestricted free agent immediately, or can accept the decision, which mandates Niemi would play for that salary for one season. The Hawks can also accept the decision and then trade Niemi.

Niemi was expected to seek at least $3 million, after making $827,000 last season as he led the Hawks to the Stanley Cup title. Because of salary cap constraints, the Hawks were believed to be seeking a decision in the $2 million range.

The death by a thousand cuts continues in Chicago.

The Hawks are in the red, bigtime. And having Huet around is a 100% doesn't help matters. Wirtz is committed to winning, obviously. But there comes a point when you have to start making money again. He said it'll take 4-5 yrs before they recoup last season's losses alone.

Niemi won't be kept. And more changes will inevitably have to be made. Not just to get under the cap. But to start making money again. They can't raise ticket prices enough to make up for the shortfall at the moment.

How's that? Halak makes what 3.5M?

Besides, the SC has some merit even though Niemi wasn't the key to SC win.

I remember most Hawk fans saying he will get ~2.

Also where did this Turco for 1.5M come from? Would be surprised if he took that kind of a cut, maybe gets desperate at the end of the summer.

Chicago is still a very solid team, but man have they lost a lot of depth. Is Kyle Beach not expected to make the team? I figured they would be expecting him to provide a lot of the grit/toughness they've lost this off-season.

As for the ruling, Niemi got a pretty good deal out of this considering he's only had one NHL season. Mind you he did win the cup, but it's not as if he was the key in that win.

This is interesting. 2.75 is border-line as to whether or not they'll keep him.

He makes too much, he'll spend a year in Rockford.

Claiming to be in the red and actually being in the red are worlds apart.

People are making a too big deal about that article. It's a case of Hollywood accounting. It's not like the Hawks or Wirtz are running out of money any time soon.

?

Halak signed for 4 years at $15 million - $3.75 million per season cap hit.
http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=533860

I am not sure how that is a comparable.
