This is the problem with the NHL, guys like Burke, who give contracts to guys who have not really proven themselves.

http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=326386

How does Kulemin get $4.7 for two years with his numbers? I just don't get that sort of logic. I like him as a player and he lit it up once he was put on a line with Bozak towards the end of the year. They both played well but if he's getting that sort of contract, what is fair to give to Hornqvist? I think Poile and Hornqvist come to some sort of agreement on a fair deal but these types of deals that Burke throws out are ridiculous and make the market what it is, guys who are way overpaid for their production.

Burke has stupid Toronto money. He can afford to overpay. He can just walk down to the basement of the ACC and say "Yeah, I need to inflate the Loonie again so I can sign FAs. Print me up some more of that Monopoly money you guys love."

Matt Moulson came out of nowhere to score 30 goals for the islanders, much like hornquist did.

signed a 1 year 2.45 Million dollar deal.

I think that the bar is there now.

combine that with the Mason Raymond deal ... it's time for Poile to do his magic

unless hornqvist and his agent are being complete jerks, it'll get done.

hornqvist has no other option besides holding out, which would be a colossal mistake.

Poile has never failed to give someone who earned it a reasonable raise.

I would be willing to bet that poile has put two offers on the table: A one year deal in the 2.5 to 2.75 range or 2 years 4-4.5 mil. Hornqvist just has to decide which way he wants to go.

Yeah, with the Latendresse deal as well, now Raymond at $2.5M and $2.6M, and that was when he had filed for arbitration (but this got done right before the meeting with the arbitrator), I think Hornqvist's negotiating position is set.

$2.5M is the fair value, figure out the term, 1-3 years.

Someone can throw an offer sheet at hm, but agian, if it is high enough I think we take the picks. Nashville, pending an offer sheet, holds all the cards here. now I think the org will do right by him and offer 2-2.5 million, not much more.

in regard to when holmstrom was 24 and not playing, it was a different time, a differnt cba. holmstrom is the best in the world at what hornquist does. You pay a guy for what he does today, not what happened 10 years ago.
I'm confused. What are we disagreeing with here? I think Holmstrom's situation and associated contract are a bad comparison. I assume that's what you are disagreeing with, but I can't for the life of me see how your post, which I substantially agree with, supports this disagreement.

Agreed, and the fishwrapper had a few other comparisons that have previously been mentioned. What about Hornqvist's situation could there possibly be to allow him to command more than $2.5-3 million? I can't think of much.

Patience. These things often take some time. He'll be signed by camp.

Poile was on vacation recently. He's back, they're working on it I'm sure. I wouldn't worry too much about it at this point. Other teams are still negotiating with their RFA's too.

"breakthrough" in hornqvist contract talks!

-" But we have reached a breakthrough in negotiations and I have a very good dialogue with the Nashville general manager David Poile. I think it will resolve itself in the near future."

I've seen where he was out on vacation already. As a matter of fact it's mentioned earlier in this thread.

Devin Setoguchi just signed for $1.8 mill. No way does Hornqvist get more than Seto.

Seto scored 36 pts last season, Horny 51. He will get 2.5.

Setoguchi's deal hurts Hornqvist in that it is a comparable if Horns production drops, but really doesn't hurt him as much since Patric had his 30 goal season this year, while Seto's came a year early...

Matt Moulson(2.5) and Mason Raymond (2.75) are a lot better comparables for Hornqvist than Setoguchi though, based on last year's production.

Setoguchi was a 65 pt player the season before and had an injury shortened season in 09-10. Raymond's numbers were better in both seasons.

All three are comparables .. but Hornqvist has only one season to justify his desires. All seven of his points during 08-09 were in his first 15gp ... before getting sent down.

Who was Setoguchi playing with, that 65 point season? You don't think that perhaps factors in when negotiating a contract?

I'll re-iterate...Matt Moulson is the best comparable. Guillaume Latendresse is probably the next, and then Mason Raymond...tailing behind the other two given that he's done it more than once.

Moulson and Hornqvist are completely different types of players. There really isn't a good comparable out there for Hornqvist, which is probably why it's taking so long.
