It did, and if we still had that pick, we could have possibly traded up one spot and picked... Claude Giroux.

...OUCH, Giroux would definitely fill a void on this team had we picked him, but who knows what our scouts would have done with that pick if we had it.

If we stayed there though, I think we'd have likely ended up with Nick Foglino or Matt Corrente. If we drafted Foglino, I just don't see us using the next pick on Geoffrion necessarily...

Agreed, I'd bet dollars to donuts that it would have been Nick Foligno over Giroux, who didn't fit the Poile model in any way, especially at the time. Foligno is a nice player and all, but not so great that I'm still bitter about the 2006 draft, four years later.

Ek is reporting an arbitration award of 2.75mil for Niemi. Welcome to the 15th level of cap hell, Chicago.

Looks like Niemi will get 2.75 Million and the Hawks might walk away or trade him with an unofficial agreement with Turco for 1.5 Million

More and more the Hawks are looking like a team that will be fighting the Preds for 3rd place.

Actually, Niemi's award is lower than expected...rumor is that the Hawks are thrilled\more likely to trade another salary then walk away or trade Niemi. The Turco thing seems to be yet another product of "*************."

A best case financial situation for the Hawks with Niemi in the lineup and Huet buried. A 20 man roster with less than $1mil in cap space remaining for short term injuries and illness. To keep Niemi requires not only burying Huet's salary in the minors, but clearing additional space.

Burying Huet is a given at this point, but I think they're more likely to move someone like Kopecky or Brouwer than swap Niemi for Turco

Kopecky or Brouwer fail to clear enough space for any meaningful impact on the cap. They need to clear a couple of million to have a 21-22 man roster and wiggle room for injuries ... a couple hundred thousand does them no good.

Kopecky(1.2 million) + Turco(call it 1.5 million) = 2.7 million
Brouwer(1.1 million) + Turco(1.5 million) = 2.6 million

Add in Brouwer or Kopecky replacement and their net savings is $500k or so .... Turco is rumored to be about a $1.25mil savings over the arbitration award for Niemi. Totaled savings of about $1.75mil if they bury Huet, walk from Niemi, and sign Turco at $1.5 .... Trade Kopecky and replace him with a league min player .... bring up two more league min players for a #7 d-man and 13th forward and they would have about $1.8mil in cap space to get through the season to cover callups. Cutting it very close and making big sacrifices up front, on the blue line and between the pipes for that minimal amount of flexibility.

Wow, the cap sure bit them in the butt, didn't it? I'm not sure they'll even be able to field a 23-man roster to start the year...

yet, if you ask them, they're as good if not better than they were last season.

sadly, i think this helps chicago more than hurts them. now, rather than filling out 10 or so spots with rookies and min vet guys, they will be able to add a couple of solid vets.

The way I look at it is adding Turco might be a downgrade in terms of consistent puck-stopping ability, but adds a new dimension to the Blackhawks defense with his puck handling abilities. Overall, I think this should be viewed as a short term upgrade, but a long term loss...
