If Sather gave Kovalchuk a 17 yr 100+ mill contract

Do you think the general opinion of the situation would be different? The same?

Nope, it would be even worse. We'd be even more demonized as a fan base as another one of those "evil big market teams that buy every player"

I still believe getting Kovy would have been a great fit for this team
now and into the future. 28 Year old superstar Franchsie players don't
become available as a UFA very often... It was a missed opportunity..

Sather would have figured out a way to work the Salary cap and
make it work..

Of course it would have been different. Devil fans would also be creaming their pants and gloating about the whole thing instead of crying about it.

Mark Messier was one of the rare exceptions of this team paying big money to big names that worked out, albeit most of them were older. My guess is that somehow, someway this guy would have underperformed and eventually been an albatross around our neck for whatever reason.

I really was surprised that the league disallowed the contract because it usually kisses lamoriello's ring if not his ass.

You can guarantee if the Rangers signed him for this type of contract every other team in hockey would have been on TV claiming the Rangers ruined hockey.

Well, if Kovy signed here Devils fans would claim that he magically forgot how to backcheck, is a selfish player, and somehow made their team worse when he joined them.

But since he's a Devil none of those things apply.

The outrage level around the league might have been a little higher, but the contract would have been rejected by the league regardless of the tream offering it.

And since the process is still ongoing, we don't know the ultimate outcome. There's still a good chance that Kovalchuk will be playing under that comtract for the Devils come October.

It would have been Waaaaaaaaay different.

The NHL brass probably would have disciplined us by forcing a dispersal draft of our roster.

It is what it is. The Rangers are the team of record in the East along with the Leafs. What they do makes headlines, stirs emotion and savage reaction. Makes no difference if either team has won a Cup in half a century or even made the playoffs in a decade. If that contract was with the Rangers it would be covered on World News broadcasts, not just sports. Similar to Flyers dirty play and suspensions. Those clips would make National news as well.

A 17 year contract to a player who has never been out of the first round! Who has proven nothing yet. No way! What ever happened earning your money.

We would be spending a lot of time in the Trade Rumors/Free Agency board arguing that the NHL can't prove it's cap circumvention.

And if Sather gives Kovalchuk that deal he's a moron, if Lou gives him it, he's a genius.

Any contract over 5-7 years is blatant cap circumvention.

Not necessarily. It's the front-loaded salary that makes a contract sketchy, not the length itself.

I don't know how different things would be if it were the Rangers who signed him to that deal. Just Devils, Flyers and Islanders fans doing the hating instead of Rangers, Flyers and Kings fans.

I honestly can't understand how many threads they've gone through on the trade rumors board regarding this signing. I think that whatever the arbitrator rules, he'll still be a Devil by the time the season starts. If he rules in favor of NJ then he gets the mega deal, if he rules in favor of the league then Lamoriello restructures the deal and he's still a Devil. LA & KHL fans are hoping otherwise.

Maybe it's just be me but with a hard salary cap I'd pay Crosby, Malkin and Ovechkin 10 million, not Kovalchuk.

And yeah, the Rangers would be vilified, but who cares?
