On Bleacher Report it is being reported that Asham might sign with Vancouver by week's end... BUT... in an interview with NHL Insider Todd Cordell, he states that Arron wants to re-sign with the Flyers.
Quote:
Cordell: The Lightning and Canucks are showing the most interest in Asham, however, if it is possible Arron Asham would like to stay in Philly and would take a pay cut to do so.
Personally, I'd love to see him return as he would IMO greatly improve the depth of the squad... I'd like to see him play in front of Shelley who I'd rather see spot dressed.
IMO Arron can play on the third or forth line and would be great to have as insurance against LTI at wings. He would be a reasonable Cap hit and a better everyday player than Shelley. That said, if he signs elsewhere it is not the end of the World... the move merely would afford greater depth on the team.
I understand that the Flyers are still very interested in re-signing him.
No room, and we don't need a team with 5-6 4th line players. I liked Ash a lot, but I don't see Holmgren getting rid of any of our bottom players so there's no point.

Betts is still iffy to start the season... If Homer wasn't still interested I'd dismiss this, but from all indications, the Flyers would love to bring him back at the right cost.
So you plan on carrying 14 forwards and waiving Cote?
We currently have 8 d-men so I guess why not?
I believe Cote is gone when Betts returns no matter what.
IIRC they can carry up to three extra skaters and one backup goalie... or variations of that -- extra goalie and 1-D, 1-F for example -- Usually teams carry two extra forwards and one extra D-man... With eight D-men, as they now have, there is room for only one forward. If they carry 14 forwards, one D-man gets moved.
In the Cap Era, it would be nice to carry only two extras... or even only one... to save Cap Space.
It would be SERIOUS paycut for Asham, and that's if we waived Cote.
And imo, I don't think Shelley will be scratched as much as people are saying. $1.1 mil to be spot dressed is a waste just as much as signing him was a waste.

... I detest the Cap in so many ways.
You can have 23 guys on your roster. 12 forwards - 6 D - 2 Goalies are your regulars, so you have room for 3 more if you want. Most teams carry 1 forward and 1 D (if they can). It's quite rare to carry any more than that because it's just another hit you take on your cap.

If he's scratched his cap hit is lowered. Say he plays 41 games and isn't on the roster the others that's a 550k cap hit.
