Sincere Proposal from a Leafs fan

Tomas Kaberle
John Mitchell
Conditional 4th '11 (if Kaberle doesn't re-sign)

Tim Connolly
One of Patrick Kaleta, Paul Gaustad or Luke Adam

Analysis

This is as sincere as it can get. Sabres are not giving up their top prospect. It fills a need for both teams. Toronto gets much needed depth on offense with Connolly, and Buffalo gets that much needed PMD. I'm interested in finding out how you guys think this deal affects each team involved.

I would do that deal if it was Connolly/Adam. The main pieces each have a year on their contracts. That being said, when have divisional rivals ever made a trade of this magnitude with each other?

Value-wise, it's actually not terrible.

Question: if we give up Connolly, who plays 2nd line center? Niedermayer?

The Sabres are in no position to be dealing away a center, let alone a top 6 center.

Switch out Connolly for, say, Stafford and a third? I'm not a huge Timmy fan, but we can't really afford to give up a center unless another is coming back. I like the value, though.

I doubt you would do this but...

Kaberle, Grabo

for

Pomminville, Mair or Gaustad

(Not sure how highly you value Pomminville) But i'd rather him over injury prone Connolly...

Mair is a UFA, Goose isn't gonna get traded being Miller's best buddy (And hopefully MUCH better this year since he should be healthy), and you can have Pominville instead of Connolly if you want.

Honestly, Pomminville straight up for Kaberle makes sense...

Losing Pomminville might hurt but the fact Ennis is on the rise makes it doable..

Ennis, Roy, Vanek, Connolly, Hecht, Stafford is still a decent top 6 forward group, and you get that PMD...

I'd rather offer up Kassian than Adam. Kassian may be a physical beast in the making but there's a vibe about his recklessness on and off the ice that I'm not sold on as a good thing to have on a team.

Forget about including Kaleta; and although I've been disappointed with Gaustad in past seasons, his size is a rarity on the roster that I doubt the Sabres sacrifice - not to mention that losing Connolly in the deal already thins out the center depth.

i think there is potential around Kaberle for Pominville... but i think Toronto has to add something of value to even out the UFA aspect of Kaberle.

I post this on Leafs board:

To Buffalo:
Tomas Kaberle + Mikhail Grabovski

To Toronto:
Tim Connolly + Drew Stafford

Or at least compensation if he doesn't resign (I'm thinking something a bit better than a 4th....)

And the Sabres would likely need two additions to the top 6 should we lose Pominville.

I can't lie, Kaberle feeding Vanek on the PP would be unreal...

I'd definitely give up Connolly + Gaustad/Adam for that if I was Regier.

Naturally, I prefer Adam over Kaleta, and Kaleta over Gaustad, but I'm a fan of Gaustad. I think he'll be a fine option as our 3rd line C , and is a Burke type player.

Burke wanted a top 6 forward and secondary toughness, and this move would help him achieve that.

How would you consider the Leafs to be overall with the addition of those two pieces?

Gaustad AND Connolly? Who then plays center besides Roy and Niedermayer - especially after Kennedy gets let go?

Losing Gaustad's size is bad enough but trading him with Gaustad cripples the team in the middle and forces another trade for a center. I'd be in shock if Regier could pull off a trade for Kaberle - expecting him to find another top 3 center to fill the vacancy seems like asking for a miracle.

Unless Burke or Regier were to get Kaberle extended before finalizing a deal...

its a quandary...

the Sabres have no Center depth... Connolly is nearly a pt per game player when healthy and a very very good playmaker... but he's in the last year of his deal.

Pominville is signed for 4 more years. and although "slightly" overpaid, he's a very very very very very very dependable forward, he's going to give you 65+ points, great 2 way play, and special teams play.

We can afford to lose Pominville, due to winger depth.... but we'd rather part with Connolly, but dont have anyone to replace him....
