Markov for captain ?

Yesterday i recieved some inside information from a former Habs player that the new captain will officially be Andre Markov ! No doubt 100% sure he said. He also said that the reason he wasn't named last year was because they were waiting for the citizenship celebration.

I have no problem with Markov as captain if he wants it, he is the heartbeat of that team. My concern is that he takes it reluctantly and struggles with all the ,media crap and it affects his play. I think guys like Gionta are more comfortable with the media.

Whoever ends up captain, I would hope that Geoff Molson and Gauthier stand by him when La Presse pulls out it's usual "Habs captain should speak french" BS.

I also hope that the day they name him captain(if it's true) that they announce a nice new 4-5 year extension at a reasonable cap hit(under 6 would be great, at 6 would still be good, 6.2-6.5 would be a tad high).

To me Markov makes sense, especially with his contract expiring. Gives him a little more incentive to sign a favorable deal with the Habs.

If it is, I don't mind the choice at all.

Interesting point I never thought about it that way. I guess it shows the habs commitment and confidence towards Markov as well as his value to the team.Good point!

I'm glad if it is Markov because I don't foresee Gomez and Gionta staying here all that long.

Maybe they will be gone at the end of this season, maybe not until the end of next year but I don't see either of them finishing off their present contracts here.

Not necessarily. Look at the Price situation, one could argue that the habs have committed to him and showed confidence in him by choosing him over Halak and it doesn't look like we'll get a home-town discount on him, lol.

Why do you say that? I would say the opposite, they are here for another 4-5 years.

I know, completely off topic.

I would be ok with Markov as captain, but it would be my 3rd and last choice. I would have liked for once a Captain that leads by example and that also is well spoken and not afraid to speak up.

That would make for a great press conference
1) Markov is the new captain
2) His contract is extended for 8 years / 40M$ frontloaded

This is from Mac Coy, an old french cowboy comic book that started in '74.
The painter is Antonio Hernandez Palacios. The detail is marvelous.

Source (fr) : http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-1187-BD-Mac-Coy.html

PS: I have have the 2 first books in bad shape, but I found easily the rest of the collection on the Internet.

On the topic : Well, Markov was the last to be named last year at the first home game (with the mic problem). I think that if he was healthy, he should have been named captain at this time.

If we're going to front load a contract it should be Markov's and he should be given one ASAP. We all know if anyone is dealt by the deadline it's going to be Hammer unless we aren't in a playoff spot, then probably Markov as a rental.
