Why they were waiting that he get his citizenship??

He is not better or worse because he is now a canadian citizen.

He is still russian and he is still our best defenseman. He is still A.Markov.

I'm not saying that Markov as a captain is bad choice but I don't understand why the fact that he is now a dual citizen (Canada-Russia) matters in the captaincy issue.

I don't think the citizenship matters in his status as would-be captain. The citizenship celebration only matters with the captaincy announcement... It's only PR. Nothing else.

I'll restrain myself on this one but I'll say this. If markov is captain I honestly don't care if he doesn't speak french. When police in montreal aren't billingual, why should a russian athlete be trilingual?

That aside, Markov is a good guy and if he's captain, no problemo.

Gilchrist was just random. Decent player though. Prototypical of the Habs player of his era: 2-way player in the Gainey, Carbo, Keane tradition.

In what I'd call a surprise twist to Gainey's bold and often criticized moves last off-season, the Habs are finally building a team identity... collecting all these Gilchrists

Does this mean Markov now has carte blanche to yell at Price?

I say Dollard St-Laurent. He's old. Heck, he may be dead. Or Dickie Moore. He's still close to the team.

I'm going to come out and guess Guy Lafleur, Guy never shuts up. lol

So who is going to wear the C ala Kovalev while Markov is injured for 3/4 of the games this year?

I am not going to pretend I know somebody but...

Gorges is in a lot of PR stuff these days. He was at a Canadiens development camp, he was at J. Martin's camp yesterday and he is representing the Habs in Calgary today for the Outdoor game media event.

Also, in the playoffs this year Martin included Gorges as one of his "leaders" in a round 3 meeting. The others were Gill, Gionta, Cammalleri and Gomez. Markov was injured.

Plus he was captain in Kelowna, Markov could only dream of having this honor bestowed upon him.

Gorges is my personal choice. He seems least likely to be phased by the extra pressure, let Markov/Cammy/Gomez/Gionta play the game and do what they do: contribute on the scoresheet.

Cam , Gomez and Gionta are too small to be captain........u need ot be at least 5'10 to be captain IMO.

So Markov is a good choice.
