Well, he'd be a good option for a fourth line center. We were grooming him for that position.

Betts' extension kind of killed that.

Excerpt from Euroflyers report on Backlund's hip surgery:

Quote:
Johan Backlund is still walking with crutches.

"They took an MRI from my hip and I was told that I had a cartilage in my hip joint and that I needed an operation after the season", Backlund explains. "But I was forced to keep playing because our other goalies also had injuries and it ended up making my injury worse."

The operation that was done in Nashville earlier this summer was successful. Backlund has to use crutches for five to eight weeks.

I hope he gets to play some games with the Flyers this season, and given who our goalies are, I think he might have a shot.

Kind of a shame. I feel bad for Kalinski. He would make an exceptional 4th line center, but it's almost feeling like he'll never get the chance with us.

Unlike most, I actually think Backlund will surprise people this season. I think he might have the ability to take the starter's spot if Leighton fails.

Big news for Jakub Kovář as long tenured České Budějovice starter Roman Turek, 40, announced his retirement this morning.
The third goalie in Ceske Budejovice is the 19 year old Šimon Hrubec, Kovar should be the starter for the moment.

I still hold a slim of hope for Kovar, in limited time behind Turek his numbers are pretty good, and I'm excited to see what he can do with a full workload.

I'm hoping he can be a decent NHL goaltender.

How much longer do the Flyers hold his rights?

Kovar didn't impress me much when he played in the OHL. Maybe he is a late bloomer though. Many goalies are. I still like Bobo, Erickson and Riopel more. I didn't like his cross crease speed and he is 5 hole machine. Remind you of anyone in the system right now?

On the flip side he played on both OHL teams with Neuvirth and outplayed him, so there is hope.

Here's an article about Gustaffson from Euroflyers. He seems comfortable biding his time in the AHL, and accepts that it may take a few years to reach the NHL.

excerpt:
Quote:
Erik Gustafsson says it was a valuable experience for him to play with the Adirondack Phantoms at the end of last season. His instant success with the Phantoms caught him by surprise.

"Ha ha. I think I had scored seven goals total in three seasons before that. It was damn cool to be there and play and everyone was nice. I got to know them a little bit before this season and I also learned a little how some of them play."

Gustafsson was also given a chance to practice with the Flyers during the playoffs.

edit:
Joacim Eriksson's new goalie gear from Euroflyers twitter http://twitter.com/euroflyers .

It looks pretty nice minus the advertisements.

Eriksson was ranked 15th best goalie prospect by The Goalie Guild, Riopel 27th, and Bobrovsky 60th.

I talked to the guy about that.

He said it's based on fantasy only, not potential.

I actually called him out on having Bobrovsky under Riopel. There are some other issues I had with it, but as I said, he came and said that they aren't necessarily based on skill.

I don't know how that works, but that's what he said.

If it was based on Fantasy, it would be based upon putting up the best stats...which makes a good goalie...Hmmmm

Michael Leighton put up good stats last year in Philadelphia. Does that make him a good goalie?

whats the Phantoms schedule look look like this year? As some of you know I am a fan of the Manchester Monarchs and many of us are not happy with the schedule this year. we play no games against the west this year. In fact 2 teams in the Eastern division they dont play(Syracuse and WBS). 44 out of 80 games come against 4 teams in the Atlantic. Worcester,Springfield, Providence and Bridgeport. One of the worst schedules I have seen at any level.

If that's the case, then the guy is clueless...

That's all you need to know.

I love how Anthony and Glen on WIP's midday show mention Bobrovsky from time-to-time. Looks like we aren't the only one's who know that secret.

It looks like their schedule hasn't been released yet. I heard that about the AHL schedule this year, that sucks.

Those two, like every other radio host in Philly, don't know **** about hockey. One day Glen said, "I just don't understand the Shelley signing, how can you pay a goon 3M/year?"

I listen to Mikey Miss because I listen to music all day at work and get a little tired of it for the ride home and whenever he mentions hockey I cringe at how someone who works in SPORTS talk radio doesn't know **** about one of the 4 major sports. Maybe a little less NBA research/talk in a city that doesn't care about their NBA team and a little more NHL for one of the top 3 US hockey markets?

The "Bring on the Future" Phantoms open preseason play on Fri, Oct 1 vs the Albany Devils at Glens Falls. The Phantoms will hit the road for games on Sat and Sun night that same weekend, with Sunday's game being at Syracuse.

I assume Riley Cote will make his coaching debut Friday night.

For those doubting Eriksson, saying tearing up the 2nd league means nothing...

Good start so far:

Quote:
Joacim Eriksson was named player of the game again when Skellefteć beat Luleć 3-2.

I learned through Euroflyers twitter, http://twitter.com/euroflyers, that Mike Testwuide has joined twitter. Andrew Rowe has one too, but neither has said much as of yet.

Not necessarily. He could have signed an AHL contract and then will be loaned to Greenville.
