I like the way Santorelli plays. It didn't work out for him last year in Nashville, maybe he will have better success this year.

Any word on the conditions of the pick?

What would it take to acquire Cal? 4th Rounder

Honestly. I think I'd be happy with a 2nd or 3rd. In my mind, he's fighting Sergei Kostitsyn for a roster spot for playmaker in Nashville. If anyone wants a cheap 3rd line center make a bid. Nashville currently has: Lombardi, Wilson, Legwand, Goc, Smithson, Lundmark, O'Reilly, Geoffrion, Spaling who could make the team if they have phenomenal camps.

Nashville is up to 9 picks as is and I have a feeling Poile wants 10 with this draft.

I know nothing about Santorelli--is he a likely NHL regular this upcoming season? Or is this mainly an AHL/depth signing?

Nope, I got my sights set squarely on Jose Theodore. In an article Tuesday night by Jim Diamond (Nashville Examiner beat writer covering the Preds) Poile denied even having spoken with him, but just last night an article appeared in LePress contradicting that and Diamond just wrote to me...

@SLakePreds The reporter in Mtl contacted me yesterday and said his source on Preds & Theo talking is good so we shall see.

So we shall see...but, before anyone else is brought into the organization...look for Hornqvist and Franson to be signed first so that Poile knows how much he has left in the budget...

Shady business. How can you trade one brother, and keep the other?

I know. i know. If Florida wants Mark they can have him for a pick.

Hell, if Colorado wants Cal to play with Ryan just offer a pick.

Thought mike santorelli has some high AHL value. 5th round pick seems a bit low.

Not really, look at the talent on the UFA market and see there's a lot of guys who are good enough to play. Because of this it's a buyer's market.

Also I think Nashville was just happy to get something for him and clear a roster spot. The spot was more valuable than the player.

To me, I'm asking myself is Cal O'Reilly worth a 2nd/3rd in this market?

Likewise. Even if Santorelli doesnt become anything more, he's a solid AHLer for Rochester and they probably needed 1 more scoring forward.

This isn't an ahl depth signing- I think he will be given a shot with the big club and could stick. He has goal scoring ability and offensive flare but could never play responsible enough to make Trotz happy. I didn't like his game that much and thought there was some immaturity on his part along the way (contrast to, say, Spaling who seems more in the Preds mold) but there is some chance the Panthers get a light Rich Peverly-ish like result.

He also has some shootout ability that could help. I could see him making the transition but, again, glad he is moving elsewhere. Ok trade for both teams.

The Preds have a very, very identifiable style, mindset and makeup that comes from the Poile/Trotz model. Some players that can succeed elsewhere will not make it in Nashville.... Santo may be one of those guys.

Good to see we got something for him, he wasn't going to make it here with all the forward depth. Now we have room to sign a goalie, Theo?

The next Rich Peverley. He's been a bit snake-bitten in the NHL so far, but I think he's got it in him to be a scoring line C at the NHL level.

low risk, high reward.

Santo scored on his first three or four shootout tries. Otherwise wasnt so good. Probably would have been demoted sooner last year except for his shootout success.
if that wasnt a fluke he'll probably get the panthers a couple or threee points solely on shootouts.

but he had no place in nashville. Since he's gone east, best of luck to him...

Wasn't Cal waived early last season? I wanted the Avalanche to pick him up then. If they didn't go for Cal then though, I doubt they are going to offer up a pick for him now.

Mike made the team out of camp last season, but couldn't do much of anything when given time on a scoring line. He's not good enough defensively to be a center, and he doesn't really play the wing very well at all.

He has good 1v1 skills and okay speed, but he just can't put all the tools together to become an NHL player.

Santorelli was a restricted free agent. He doesn't have a contract unless the Preds re-signed him. The conditional part is probably contingent on him being signed by Florida.

To qualify an RFA, you must place them on the 50 man reserve list. Therefore, Santorelli was accounting for one of the spots. However, as 101st Fan pointed out to me this evening on the Preds board...we have three sliding contracts (Ellis, Latta, Olivier-Roussel) this year that actually allow us to go to 53 contracts as long as those players don't play in 10 NHL games this season.

Effectively with today's move the Predators are now at 46 contracts on the reserve list with the three sliding deals not counting against the limit...
