Wayne Stephenson ex-Flyers' goalie passed away

I don't recall seeing a thread on this topic but Wayne Stephenson passed away at 65 y/o. He was best known as the Flyers' goalie who stepped in for injured Bernie Parent during most of the 1975-76 Cup Finals season. He did an admirable job despite the overpowering shadow of trying to do the impossible: replace Parent.

Sad news.

Sucks. RIP Wayne.

Any word on cause of death?

65 is still very young.

Apparently it was a while back. Wonder how this one got past off of the Flyers board.

Second all time in Win % for Flyers goalies that have played more than 100 games (69.3%, behind Bob Froese).

He was ill for a lengthy period of time. His sons represented him at the closing of the Spectrum back in 2008 during the preseason.

Also the goalie for the Flyers vs. the Soviet Red Army team, as Parent was hurt then as well. Very sad news.

Awful news. One of the best masks ever. But more importantly, a great hockey talent. RIP Wayne.

This truly blows.

As much as I rooted for Bernie I always really dug Wayne's mask. So much so that was the last paint job (so to speak) I had on mine.

Took a trip down memory lane and found mine out in the barn. Man was it really that long ago?

Thanks for the Memories Wayne!

RIP, he brought some of the best memories of Flyers' teams in the past with the cup runs and against the Soviets. Will never be forgotten.

An obit made the Caps' site on NHL.com.

Stephenson had the reputation, at times, of being somewhat aloof. Entering the 1976 camp, while under contract, he held out seeking a better pact after his strong 1975-76 season.

He eventually agreed to rejoin the team after being suspended and fined daily but a couple of days later, Parent suffered what appeared to be a significant toe injury and it was announced he'd be out for many weeks. Stephenson's agent used it as leverage, which didn't please management, and he demanded renegotiations again. During that subsequent situation, the injury to Parent was tempered because of a protective device which allowed him to play almost immediately. Stephenson again left camp after that happened. Otherwise, a goalie named Gary Inness was scheduled to start opening night. Stephenson eventually returned in December.

Quote:
Former Caps goaltender Wayne Stephenson passed away on June 22, 2010 in Madison, Wisc. He was 65.

A 5-foot-9, 175-pound native of Fort William, Ontario, Stephenson represented Canada in the 1968 Olympic Games and was a member of the Canadian National Team for several seasons. He was signed by St. Louis as an amateur in January, 1972. After a brief (21 games) minor league apprenticeship with the Kansas City Blues of the old Central Hockey League, Stephenson broke into the NHL at the age of 27 in 1971-72, getting into two contests with the St. Louis Blues. He notched his first NHL win with St. Louis the following season, posting an 18-15-7 mark in the process

May have been on to something here, Ed Snider apparently is commenting on it now: http://flyers.nhl.com/club/news.htm?...avid=DLPHIhome

This would indicate to me that the Flyers were unaware of this until someone over in Voorhees was looking around here and saw this thread. Strange.
