If the contract gets approved I hope on Tuesday dean signs drew to a 25 year contract.

That would never happen. AEG and Dean don't roll that way.

I would be surprised if the NHLPA wins this.

I think the contract will be voided. NJ is going to be in some hot water because they can't really afford a revised contract (they can barely afford this one).

Kovy is going to take the "business" stance and say he took the best deal available, but business is going to dictate that he sign somewhere else.

Rangers or Kings IMO.

I would still welcome a player of his caliber here 100%.

How?

Even if they dump Redden in the AHL, they will only have about $6.8M in cap space while still having to sign Staal.

Unless the penalties exceed $3M, he's still gonna sign with NJ.

There are many ways how. They didn't have room for Gaborik either...their GM found a way and got rid of Gomez.

At least Gomez had SOME ability(and is a pretty good fit with the Habs) they aren't gonna be able to bait someone into taking Drury.

I would prefer Chris Drury to Gomez. Both of their contracts suck.

I was just answering your question on how the Rangers could get Kovalchuk. if they really really want him there are plenty of ways to make it happen. I was just using the Gomez trade as an example of moves they have done in the past to get things done.

They could bury Redden, trade Staal, trade Gaborik, Roszival has a hefty cap hit, but is going to be paid alot less actual money which appeals to alot of teams.

All I'm saying is that the Rangers are a team with the capital to be a frontrunner if he becomes a UFA again.

NHL wins

Kovy signs a 1-2 year contract worth 7-8m per with NJ giving them time to manage thier cap issues .

Kovy re-tries a 10 year 70-80m contract in 2 years.

If this goes through Dean should sign Drew until he is 50 with 10 years of the league minimum at the end.

With Kovalchuk at a $6 million cap hit, the Devils are already $2.3 million over the cap. How would they possibly fit him under a $7-8 million cap hit, not to mention after they would be fined an additional $1-5 million toward their cap hit next season? They would be $4-8 million over the cap.

It would be a disaster PR-wise for the NHL if they lost. I have to believe their lawyers knew this is a win for them or else they let it go. This is step #1 in getting rid of the long term deals. I'd love to see a clause put in where no player can sign for longer than 5 years and use the 10 and 5 rule baseball uses for no trade clauses. It seems like every jerk in the NHL has a NTC, it should be for guys who earned the right not to be traded after they put in their time in the community.
