So we'll either be back .5 of the wildcard or 1 back of the Braves after tonight.

Great win tonight.

Braves and Giants tied 2-2 going into bottom of the ninth.

Giants beat the Braves, one game behind now and half our team is on the DL.

Looks like ****'s about to get real in the NL East and the full team isn't even together yet.

I was at the game tonight, and while the win was an awesome team effort, that 9th inning only reemphasizes how badly we need to bolster the bullpen in order to make a deep run. J.C. "Just Can't" Romero can't throw strikes (and really never has); his 17/22 K/BB ratio and 1.64 WHIP is atrocious and makes him a total liability. Sure, he is still tough on lefties, but you just can't count on him out there because of how often he puts guys on base.

I think there is one player who could really help our bullpen on two different levels: Brian Fuentes. His contract expires at the end of the season, so the financial obligation is minimal. He's a LHP and has been an effective closer in this league for years. Therefore, not only can he be brought in as another LHP out of the pen (because it would be playing with fire to continue to go with Romero as the only option), but he can also serve as an insurance policy in the event that Brad Lidge implodes (it's just a matter of when, really). The Angels are 10 games back in the AL West and 13 in the Wild Card. In other words, their season is over, so you have to think Fuentes will be placed on waivers soon (unless he has been already).

Madson is fine in the 8th inning. Just leave him there. I'd say have Durbin/Contreras take care of the 6th/7th inning. Romero should be a lefty specialist only. Lidge in the 9th (until he proves he is no longer worthy of the responsibility). Fuentes can pitch at any point before the 9th inning, or he can spell Lidge as our closer. I actually really like the way that bullpen looks going down the stretch. Make it happen, Ruben.

Unfortunately I don't think the Angels are ready to quit just yet, but I'd say make a decent offer now, so they'll come back in a couple weeks should they still be on the outside looking in.

As far as Romero, his whole approach infuriated me last night. Know your batters strengths and weaknesses. Hessman is a career minor leaguer with a lifetime .231 average in the minors and a ton of HRs. Probably a guy that feasts on fastballs then, and struggles when pitchers can throw in some offspeed stuff. So what does Romero do? 3 straight fastballs.

I'm guessing he thinks the world will end in 2012? lol. That's an interesting question you pose then. If he were a reasonable man I would assume he would make a safe answer like "Well, it's my belief that there will be no reason to be going for any championships after 2012, but that is my belief and, in all likelihood, not the belief of Ruben Amaro Jr."

Something else about when he was with the Marlins and he won a game vs. the Cubs with a base hit, it was either in the 9th inning or extra innings. He cried to his wife after the game because he said he never touched the ball.

The things he says, no one else could make this stuff up.

I was at the game last night too. Picked up a Brown shirt, now I'm just waiting for him to promptly change his number.

Trivia question for you guys...

what team holds the record for the most "walked in" runs in a single regular season?

Without looking it up I'll say the Mets. That seems like a Mets-type thing to do.

At least the Phillies aren't losing during this no-hitter that Santana is doing...
