This is the worst part of the off-season that most people don't seem to realize. We'll probably be fine this year, but next year?
Gagne had an expiring contract and that money could have been used next summer to re-sign Carter, Giroux, etc.
Instead of leaving things alone, Holmgren went and added $4.3M to next year's cap on players we didn't really want or need (Leighton, Walker, Shelley) and another $4M on a massively overpaid 5th defenseman. He somehow managed to trade Gagne as a salary dump and ended up with less cap space next summer...making it nearly impossible to sign all the key players. He Chicago'd us.
I'm amazed he managed to make a worse salary dump than the Upshall deal. Only Paul could pull off this level of stupidity.
exactly. Now we are going to lose 1 or more players next offseason, or Holmgren is going to be forced to make yet another stupid trade because he simply cannot grasp the concept of future salary cap implications.
its one of the reasons why I am not happy with the Meszaros trade as well.
