Cote retires

NHLFlyers: Riley Cote just announced he is retiring and will become an assistant coach with the Phantoms.

Phantoms Website:
Quote:
“We are pleased to add Riley to our coaching staff in Glens Falls,” Holmgren said. “Riley’s dedication, perseverance and passion for the game of hockey are beyond reproach. We believe he will be a good young coach, and his knowledge and experience will be very beneficial in the development of our young prospects.”

“We are thrilled that Riley is staying with us in this new capacity,” said Peter Luukko, President/COO of Comcast-Spectacor. “Riley started his playing career in the ECHL and worked as hard as he could until he achieved his dream of playing in the National Hockey League. As a coach, we’re confident he’ll pass along that work ethic, drive and determination to our prospects and help them become the best players they can be.”

“I am really excited about this coaching opportunity,” Cote said. “It’s time for me to turn the page and start a new chapter in my life. I will do the best job I can do to help teach and develop all the players in Glens Falls on and off the ice. I'm looking forward to a new challenge in life.”

Didn't expect a retirement. Guess his heart really is in Philly. Best of luck to him.

So long. Probably for the better. He was a punching bag, but he was a really cool dude. Best of luck in the new job.

Well I guess it was either this or waived/scratched on the phantoms.

Sucks to hear, even though he was on a rival team I always liked Cote. Guy was all balls and heart.

However, I sort of figured he'd go into MMA after hockey...so shocked he's becoming a coach.

Good luck to him. I'm glad he's got a spot in the organization (just not taking up cap space on the Flyers).

I like this - I don't think he was going to get a job playing hockey, but he can instill a love for the Flyers and the dedication to do whatever the team needs you to do in the youngsters in Glens Falls.

Thank you Riley, and good luck with the Phantoms. Teach the kids what it means to be a Flyer.

So, 550k more in capspace without even having to waive him!

I feel bad for the guy, but he just couldn't keep up, and wasn't good enough at being an enforcer either.

Good for him !!! Seems like the type of guy to keep around. Maybe they need a goalie coach too

So, Cote just voided a 550K paycheck to play for the Phantoms this year for a 50K paycheck to coach for the Phantoms this year?

Does not compute...

My guess is that it's not likely the whole story.

Probably wants to be able to chew bubble gum and walk at the same time for the rest of his life.

Cote's first and only NHL goal, and one of his better moments of his career:

Also, Sounds of the game, all while sitting on the bench:

Good luck, Racoon.

Really Really Like riley, he's a class act on and off the ice. Hopefully he can inspire the phantoms with as much work ethic as he put into his game.

He worked really hard on his game, and took his fair share of undeserved critisism. The guy had nothing in terms of technical ability, but was often reported to be the first one on the ice and the last one off the ice, often taking extra shots against the keepers. I wish him all the best, and really hope that he becomes a key figure in a flyers coaching role ( fitness i presume). He deserves a damn lot more respect than he was ever shown.

Edit: was also voted the toughest fighter in the NHL, not because he could throw a punch, but because he would take 50 of em

Then a MMA career probably not in his best interest.
