I wouldn't put it past the league to "throw the book at them" as an example. I just think that the season would end with an asterisk * instead of a winner.

Pittsburgh.
Side note to that, I am pretty sure that Bettman would probably just award the Cup to Pittsburgh. They deserve it.

Can you imagine if Philly had a player in Hossa's position? How long would it take Bettman to take the cup away from the Flyers?

I've always argued that too... The Cup was to be awarded to the best team in North America, according to Lard Stanley. Before it settled down to the winner of the playoffs between two NHL teams it was awarded outside the NHL. With no NHL teams able to compete, IMO, it should have been awarded to the net highest North American hockey League... which is clearly the AHL. Rather than no Cup awarded, the Phantoms should have been given it as the best team in NA that season.

While it would have not eased the pain of all the years without the Flyers winning it, It would have been good for the City... and in my mind at least shoved it up the arse of the NHL and the Players.

Also keep in mind that players that were not locked out of the NHL were allowed to compete. Pitkenen and Seidenberg went down and Richards and Carter came out of Juniors for them -- which I understand does nothing for my point -- The cream of the crop not NHL regulars and not in Juniors or college were in the AHL, including some NHL contracted players... The Phantoms were hosed.

How can you seriously say that?!?!

If they had called the game with the Phillies up and not completed it, I would have not been happy... as I would not want to live with all the claims of not winning fair and square... But as it was, the Commissioner did what was correct and suspended the game to be completed when it was. Also, the game was not completed on a field that was unplayable as it was when the Rays tied the score.

I don't understand your view on the Phillies WS clincher... with all due respect. But I do agree on the Flyers part... I wouldn't want to win a Cup that way either.

There is no way the league would ever take it away from the Hawks - they like them too much. If the Flyers won though, I could see the league taking it away.

I'm not taking anything away from the Phils. I'm still happy they won, it just figures that it wouldn't be in a conventional 9 inning non-suspended game.

I gotcha... I was just so glad they won it and was pissed that the field was so awful when the Rays came back... I hated that we had to wait a couple more days, but was relieved that it wasn't called an official game before nine inning covering any time-span was played.

I was just so damn happy I guess it didn't bother me... I remembered the game in the late '70s when they blew a championship series to the Dodgers largely because they played through a strong rain for almost the entire game. Had they suspended that game, the Phillies may have won a WS before 1980. No matter, I see where you're coming from.

Actually if chicago is found to have had an illegal contract, then the book should be thrown at them. But at the end of the day, it's the NHL's fault for not looking into it, in the first place, and at the appropriate time.

However, a fair punishment would be to void all draft picks for 3-5 years with a hefty cap punishment. Maybe a 5 million cap penalty for the duration of the draft pick void.

If they are found to be in the wrong, they have cost not only the flyers the cup, but every team they beat in the regular season and in the play-offs. How different could the rangers situation be for example.
