So Pronger wont be ready for camp and possibly the start of the season. Yet a week or so the astute GM said he will be ready, just like he said with Betts and countless others. He hsoudl just keep quiet and not comment until he has the facts as he makes himself look like a clown. It is a smart move by Pronger and the flyers though. Setting up that LTIR a few years down the line very nicely.

I can't believe he played 3/4s of the playoffs on a knee that bad and was still awesome. Pronger on one leg is still one of the best dmen in the league, just wow.

I think hatcher actually had his knee replaced.

This season whenever we're down or up by a lot we should sit our stars like Richards Pronger Briere Kimmo and Carter. Only when its a big enough lead. Pronger shouldnt be playing 29 minutes a game. This way he is well rested for the playoffs so he can pay 30 minutes plus more effectively.

With umpteen Dmen we have, you could rotate them a bit.

I'm pretty sure the moves of getting NHL experienced Dmen was more for this reason than just having a backup in case of an injury.

Maybe some Dmen will be getting overpaid for their roles, but I like it better to have an overpaid D corps that is more reliable in their own zone than having a small cap hit 3rd pairing that often get pin down in their own zone resulting in a couple of scoring chances for the opposition, if not goals.

From TSN...

REPORT: PRONGER TO MISS START OF CAMP; OPENER IN QUESTION
Quote:
According to a report, Philadelphia Flyers defenceman Chris Pronger says that his knee injury will not be healed in time for training camp next month.

Speaking to csnphilly.com on Wednesday, the 35-year-old veteran blueliner said that he hurt his knee in the first game of the Flyers' playoff series against Boston in April.

"Moving forward from there it was obviously an issue," said Pronger. "I had to get it drained a couple of times. It was pretty swollen through the course of the playoffs, but that's the nature of the game."

The team reported last week that Pronger underwent arthroscopic surgery to clean out the knee, and that the procedure showed no further damage to the area.

"With the amount of atrophy it is going to take a lot of hard work to build the leg muscles back up," said Pronger. "Obviously, I will be spending a lot of hours in the gym trying to strengthen my knee and the rest of my body."

The injury did not sideline Pronger during Philadelphia's run to the Stanley Cup final. He played 23 playoff games, and counted four goals and 14 assists while averaging just over 29 minutes of ice-time per game.

Philadelphia opens training camp on Sept. 17, and begins the regular season on Oct. 7 against the Penguins in Pittsburgh.

"I hope to be in the lineup on October 7, but it is still very early on in the process to begin guessing on a timeframe," Pronger said. "A lot can happen over the next few weeks and months, but absolutely that is one of the goals."

Pronger's ice time last year (apart from 5 games in 2002-2003) was the lowest of his career.

I agree completely. Thats why I was happt with getting Walker(didnt wanna give up Gagne though) Our Blue line should have the minutes spread fairly evenly so the load isnt on one guy or pair.

Right.

If anyone thinks we will be healthy like we were last year they are nuts. We got really lucky in terms of health to the back end last year.

chris pronger is the greatest defenseman to ever play for the flyers. by far. and while he's out. michael leighton will be the most embarressingly bad goalie to ever play an nhl game. and when pronger returns? ........leights will continue to be not good.

Leighton wasn't good in the regular season and 1/4 of the playoffs last year with Pronger in front of him?

Meh. Pronger don't need no stinking preseason. As long as he is ready come playoff time!!! No but seriously I am not too worried about this. The depth of this defensive corps can handle a couple games out of the gate without Pronger. Hopefully if he does miss any of the beginning of the season it's only a few games.
