Except they already publicly stated he's already being offered more then that, and we're not interested..... Granted, you can't trust anything they say, but I don't want him for that much.

Niemi/Leighton is a combo I can live with. Neither are great, but just platoon them and play the hot hand works for me. The competition between the two might bring the best out in each guy.

He's not going to get that anyways. Not enough teams would be after another goaltender. It's pretty much maybe us, maybe Ottawa, or maybe Washington.

Washington has Varlamov and Neuvirth and they want to play Varlamov while working Neuvirth into the NHL. However, I get that their window is wide open right now if they get good goaltending.

Ottawa, yikes.

Flyers seem happy with Leighton/Boucher which =

Rumors say they made a pitch for Kaberle.

Nah, they're really going to go with Niitty and Greiss.

I sure hope we don't sign him. we need at least another 3 or 4 defensemen before training camp.

If you believe that Flyers are in play for Niemi you may as well believe SJ are in the mix. Unreasonable?

Maybe because I do not know much about Greiss.

Yes but Burke thinks that Kaberle is worth multiple 1st round picks and prospects. I will laugh my ass off if Kaberle won't waive his NTC and signs with someone else next year. That would be sweet.

Yeah, I don't see how people still expect them to be a top team in the conference. According to HFBoards, people still expect them to be a top seed. I just don't see it.

They're significantly worse in net, their defense looks pretty bad, and even their offense is slightly worsened. They haven't improved in any single area and beyond their top six (and arguably their bottom six too) they have a pretty bad team on paper as is.

Just off the top of my head they've lost Nabokov, Malhotra, and Blake.

No, because the Sharks just signed him as a free agent (they wanted Leighton), and Greiss is a young goalie who they think can play). The Flyers aren't in the same situation where Boucher is more expendable.

I just wish we brought in Biron

Now we might just be better off to wait and see how the season plays out and if Leighton/Boucher start to suck we either sign a free agent or trade for a starting goalie by the trading deadline.

I wish, but we don't have the space. I don't believe Niemi's being offered anything near what he got in arbitration, he has absolutely no leverage at all, and a very limited number of suitors. SJ believes one of Greiss, Nitty, or Stalock is the answer long term, and Ottawa looks to believe Leclaire can rebound or Elliott can do the job. Washington has Varly and Neuvrith. We're really the only team that makes sense, but I still don't see it.

it makes sense. But Holmgren would never waive Boucher.

Niemi didn't finish his sentence.

But the pain in his voice was obvious when he discussed the speed with which the Hawks moved on after an arbitrator awarded Niemi a $2.75 million salary the team chose not to pay.

Paying Niemi at that price would have required the Hawks to shed even more salary and get rid of players they valued more. So they wasted no time turning to Turco, a cheaper, older option with an impressive resume.

I'm not all for this move, but if it happens I wouldn't complain. If they are going to make other moves I think it should be for a veteran winger if it isn't a huge upgrade over Leighton, which I don't think Niemi is. He is better that Leighton but it isn't like he would be a real long-term solution to this team's goalie problems either.

I'm sure they are looking at Niemi....as they watch game tape from the Finals to study the team that beat them. But that's probably about the only context in which they'd be looking at Niemi.

Yeah

If he signs a 1 year deal with whoever, I can see him returning to us next year with the bonuses gone, depending on how Turco does, how much he wants, how did Crawford do, and how much Niemi will want that time around.

Well then he'd fit right in here, wouldn't he? He could be Homer's new assistant.
