Who would Belfort fight next? Seems like everyone else has lost their last fight if they're not booked. Sonnen?

Gotta be Okami or Sonnen.

Sonnen didn't take any punishment from Silva on Saturday, though his ego still might be a tad bit bruised.

Didn't he get cut pretty bad above his left eye?

I'm going to change my guess from Okami to Leben.

The UFC wants Belfort to win, and Okami could be a bad matchup for him potentially.

Leben would provide the sloppy boxing affair that Belfort would thrive in, the fans would love, and the UFC keeps their top challenger.

Then Sonnen/Okami 2 is still leftover for the next shot after, or as the first challenger if Leben were to win.

Let him beat Sonnen or Okami and then give him his title shot.

A Belfort vs Leben fight would be pretty exciting as well but I'd rather see him fight top contenders.

This isn't bad logic. Okami/Belfort could wind up like Henderson/Belfort.

If the goes the Leben/Belfort route, they should be careful about attaching a "number one contender" label to such a matchup. Everyone's reeling off Belfort's last few performances, but his consistency still carries too many question marks to not have doubts. Who knows what could happen if it makes it into the 2nd or 3rd round.

One thing is for certain, if Silva is out until 2011, as I've read, then they need to have Vitor fight someone in the interim, if he is in fact their choice as the next challenger. He's been out of the public eye too long and a win only makes it easier to sell him as the top contender.

Belfort/Sonnen in November, assuming Sonnen is ready to fight. Winner faces off against Silva in March. Makes too much sense IMO.

I think they'll go the Belfort/Leben route also. Belfort is too important to the UFC, I suspect they'll look at doing Silva/Belfort in Brazil, a fight against Sonnen/Okami is too risky.

I think Ensane hit the nail on the head about using caution when labeling a match "number one contender", just in case Leben pulls off the upset.

After that you can have any matchups based on some combo of Sonnen/Okami/Bisping-Akiyama(winner)/Nate-Palhares (winner). I'd really like to see Nate get another shot at Sonnen and have Okami fight the Bisping/Akiyama winner.

They might label it a #1 contender match for marketing purposes, and if Leben wins Dana White can just go back on it like he's done with Fitch and others.

Good point. It wouldn't be the first time, and certainly not the last time, that he's pulled that crap.

and Silva doesn't fight till march? We already have 1 champion defending his belt once a year...

Completely agree. This is the only fight that makes sense. Doing Sonnen/Okami again is a complete waste of time. I wouldn't mind Belfort/Okami, but then I have no idea who you give Sonnen to. Belfort would destroy Leben IMO.

You must've missed the reports of Silva being out until March with a cracked rib...

A buddy and I were mocking some dudes yesterday, and impersonating Belfort describing Soares as a "clown." I just watched the clip again, and I can't help but find it hilarious.

"He look lika CLOWWW."

And regarding matchups, I really think they should go with a Leben/Wanderlei fight. It could be a co-main event on its own, easily. There's guys out there like Marquardt, Belcher, etc that could fight Belfort and Okami in the interim, and I wouldn't mind seeing Sonnen get a rematch against Maia, or to see him fight Bisping.

I think Belfort and Sonnen could both be co-main events on their own, and keeping Okami away from those two keeps the top eschelon of MWs relatively deep for title contention options.
