if im not mistaken, it all went something like this:
Homer: i'm gunna sine shellee.
NYR Fans: hahaha, the Flyers need a goalie, and they wasted cap space on shelley. hahahaha.
Sather: whoa, what happened to Shelley? i guess i better try to squeeze boogard into my money hat. i think i have enough dollar-things to do that.
Okay, since I'm out of Bourbon and not playing any computer games, I have looked up the details... Both the Rags and Flyers signed their goons on the very first day of the signing period. When the Flyers signed their boy Shelley, the Rags went and signed Boogaard -- for more money and double the years, BTW... $6.5M/4yrs.
... I also found out that Shelley scored a go ahead goal in for the Rags against the Flyers in the next to the last game of the season when the Rangers beat the Flyers to tie them for the last PO berth... And then he scored the opening goal early in the next game that was the 'play-in game' that the Flyers won in OT by shocking Lundqvist. My guess is the Flyers wanted to eliminate him for six games a year against their hated rivals from up north by snatching him from under them.
And Asham won't play at all. Asham is a better player than Shelley, but Shelley is a better fighter, Powe is a better all around player for his PK work and speed, and Carcillo is just better.
On top of all that, we've got Nodl, Kalinski, Maroon, Laliberte, Legein and now Testwuide, Holmstrom, Harper (anyone else) who can play RW in a call up roll if needed.
Therefore the roster is full and Asham will have to play somewhere else this year.
Carcillo and Asham are very similar with no glaring differences, where Asham would be making less. Asham had more points and less penalty minutes (I expect Carcillo's to do gown next year regardless), despite both of them doing the exact same role. Just pointing this out so everyone's going in the same direction.
