I'd rather go for Zubrus.

Aside from age and cap hit, Elias and Smyth are NOTHING alike. Not sure I want him but Elias could do some serious damage with Kopitar.

True, but at this point in their careers that is the most important thing.

I don't want Elias skating for the Kings at age 37.

Elias has a lot less miles on that body.

Elias?

That would be a typical DL move. Overpaid veteran - more 2nd line player than a true first line player coming of an injury plagued season with decilining point numbers.

BTW, last 5 years - goals total:16,21,20,31,19.

Really need another overpaid veteran player?!??

Lombardi tried to sign Elias when he was a UFA.

It depends at what the cost is. If it is a fourth round pick than take him for a year. If it is Simmonds that take a hike.

I can't see the Devils trading Elias. That'd be like the Avalanche trading Sakic. It's just not going to happen.

I think Zubrus and Salvador are their only realistic options.

Elias is not a generational player like Sakic was

No reason for us to sign Asham. Especially considering most players coming from the East would cost more for us to sign.

Pens will probably trade Godard or Rupp now...No way they carry Cooke, Asham, Godard and Rupp.

Between 2006-09, Elias played 77/74/77 games so he's not exactly like Havlat/Gaborik out there. He played 38 games in 2005-06 because he was still recovering from nearly dying of Hep A which he got from something he ate while playing in Russia during the lockout. Last year, he missed 13 games to start the season because he reaggravated a groin injury that he had surgery for during the offseason. He missed 11 games later in the season after getting concussed after a clean hit against the Avs. Might just be, but I don't take that as injury prone.....at least not yet.

Elias was still a point per game player in 2008-09. Last year he was badly misused by Lemaire. Elias went from 31 PP points in 77 games to 11 PP points in 58 games. They forced Elias into playing center with Kovalchuk and those two guys never developed any chemistry. Elias still has gas left in the tank and most of us on the Devils board are not alright with moving him.

In three years the "core" players will be:

Doughty 23
Kopitar 25
Brown 28
Johnson 26
Bernier 25
Quick 27
Simmonds 24

In the wings:

Hickey 24
Lewis 26
Loktionov 23
Moller 24
Parse 28
Richardson 28
Schenn 21
Voynov 23
Teubert 23

I know not everyone will still be with the team, but the above core would be better served learning from some veterans.

Why not have Elias and Smyth teach this team how to become winners? In three years, Elias and Smyth (in 2 years) would be gone and the Kings would have a core entering their prime.

I don't think it will happen, but Elias would be a strong player on Kopitar's wing.

This season:

Elias-Kopitar-Williams
Smyth-Stoll-Brown
Poni-Handzus-Simmonds
Parse-Richardson-Clune/Westgarth

I heard Elias on an interview awhile back and he came off as an arrogant *****. Def nowhere near as classy as Smyth.

Honestly, who cares? As long as he gets along with his teammates and plays well, I couldn't give a flying **** what he says in interviews.

Elias is one of the classiest players in the league and he does a bunch of charity work. He was on NHL network playing soccer with some kids from Africa or somewhere. He's pure character and I can't see Lou trading him.

I already said that, but Smyth waived his to come to LA.

Just wanted to see if other fans had an interest. I would.

But Smyth also didn't want to leave Edmonton. If there's a player that doesn't mind playing in the west, it's Ryan Smyth.

If it were possible, I'd lean toward getting Elias. He's played almost 2 seasons worth of playoff games though. He's an older 34. Not a chance it would happen though. If the Devils were to trade him, he wouldn't choose a west coast team, at his age, after playing his entire career in the most dense hockey region in the country.
