While Canada wasn't super young in 04 there was a significant youth movement with the average age at 27.5. Bouwmeester was 21, Heatley was 23, Lecavaliver, Richards, Gagne, and Regehr were 24, Thornton, Marleau and Hannan were 25. And Iggy and Redden were both in their primes at 27.

Nevertheless I think the reasons 2012 will be a better tournament then '04 are twofold; infusion of youth worldwide, and allowing that youth to play skilled hockey.

Looking at defence it's obvious things are on the up and up.

Canada 2004
Niedermayer
Jovanovski
Redden
Foote
Brewer
Hannan
Bouwmeester

Regehr

USA 2004

Chelios
Klee
Weinrich
Miller
Leetch
Rafalski
Gill

Canada 2010
Niedermayer
Pronger
Keith
Seabrook
Doughty
Boyle
Weber

USA 2010
E. Johnson
J. Johnson
Suter
Rafalski
Orpik
Gleason
Whitney
Keep in mind that both Pronger and Blake were injured for the 2004 World Cup, and replaced by Hannan and Bouwmeester. While Bouwmeester played well in the tournament, I'm not sure if Hannan even played. Regardless, our defense corps would have looked better with those two veterans in the lineup.

Good point. I still think on balance though the average Canadian d-man is more skilled now then in 04. Eric Brewer during the early part of the decade was a fine enough player but he wouldn't stand a chance of making the team nowadays.

Probably everyone from the olympic team except switch neidermeyer with Suter perhaps? And if Morrow looks like he is slowing down then throw Doan in there to replace him since theyre both similar players

If you mean Ryan Suter, he's American.

I'm going to say something that I'm sure will not be popular, but there's a forward you're missing on that list: Chris Drury.

Yeah, he's sucked in New York. But for 2 weeks in February, he was awesome. I want that Drury on the team. That Drury makes Team USA better.

I hope not. One year after the Olympics? Way too soon.

As long as NHLers are playing in the Olympics, I don't want a World/Canada Cup at all. One or the other.

If I'm Canada I'm setting up a team with an eye on future tournaments and Olympics (if NHL allows), so I'm going with "hungry" players under 30, unless that player is exceptional. So players like, Thornton, Marleau, Heatley, Pronger, Boyle, Iginla are outside looking in (they got their trophies).

Crosby
Toews
Getzlaf
E. Staal
Nash
Stamkos
Duchene
Perry
M. Richards
C. Stewart
Sharp
J. Staal
Taveres

Keith
Doughty
Weber
Phaneuf
Green
Seabrook
Myers

Right. 2010 marked a changing of the guard for team Canada. Iginla and Morrow played very well, and at times Boyle and Pronger were great, but for the most part that tournament belonged to the under-25 movement let alone the old dudes. The San Jose line was mostly balls all tourney. Canada would be wise to get the Myers' and Stamkos' some time out there - Bettman won't be commish forever.

Yes... not much change from olympics except bumping Seabrook in favor of Bouwmeister and replacing Neids with Mike Green
