Elias is more injury prone than Smyth. His best days are well behind him.
Between 2006-09, Elias played 77/74/77 games so he's not exactly like Havlat/Gaborik out there. He played 38 games in 2005-06 because he was still recovering from nearly dying of Hep A which he got from something he ate while playing in Russia during the lockout. Last year, he missed 13 games to start the season because he reaggravated a groin injury that he had surgery for during the offseason. He missed 11 games later in the season after getting concussed after a clean hit against the Avs. Might just be, but I don't take that as injury prone.....at least not yet.
Elias was still a point per game player in 2008-09. Last year he was badly misused by Lemaire. Elias went from 31 PP points in 77 games to 11 PP points in 58 games. They forced Elias into playing center with Kovalchuk and those two guys never developed any chemistry. Elias still has gas left in the tank and most of us on the Devils board are not alright with moving him.
I heard Elias on an interview awhile back and he came off as an arrogant *****. Def nowhere near as classy as Smyth.
Elias is one of the classiest players in the league and he does a bunch of charity work. He was on NHL network playing soccer with some kids from Africa or somewhere. He's pure character and I can't see Lou trading him.
I already said that, but Smyth waived his to come to LA.
But Smyth also didn't want to leave Edmonton. If there's a player that doesn't mind playing in the west, it's Ryan Smyth.
If it were possible, I'd lean toward getting Elias. He's played almost 2 seasons worth of playoff games though. He's an older 34. Not a chance it would happen though. If the Devils were to trade him, he wouldn't choose a west coast team, at his age, after playing his entire career in the most dense hockey region in the country.
