Long enough to know that he's much more capable of containing bigger forwards and keeping them to the outside unlike Gilroy, who IMO doesn't belong in the NHL.
If it was up to me ; I'd have another veteran option somewhere along the lines of a Willie Mitchell next to McDonagh.
However, if you're deciding who makes you better on the back end and the decision is between Gilroy and Eminger; I'm going w Eminger.
Despite my pleas for another NHL defenseman last year they played Gilroy and blew him out. For a stretch early in the season Gilroy was arguably the best defenseman for the Rangers. It didnt last long, but he wasnt all that bad until the wheels fell off. Its difficult for a guy coming out of college playing so many less games to adapt to the NHL lifestyle and schedule.
I'm not saying hes better than Eminger or should be penciled into a starting position, but hes going to be in the discussion. You cant have short memories with players especially when they are going into their second season. I soured on Gilroy too, but he showed he could play at this level.

Fair enough.
Im perfectly happy with whichever one plays better, even if that means Gilroy-Eminger with McDonagh in hartford. 3rd pairing defense is not a real point of consieration I think with this team that leans so heavily on Staal, Rozsival, and Girardi aginst other team's top players; I think Del Zotto's play in the #4 slot is much more important.

That bottom pair can be critical in helping to take pressure off the top 4. If we can find a duo that clicks chemistry wise and plays a simple game it'll do wonders for us.
Give the guy a chance. It was his first professional season and he finished:
69 gp, 4g, 11a, 15p, EVEN rating, 16:18 TOI
Not terrible. Sure he looked lost most of the time, but he was thrust right into a professional league after playing against kids.
Yup he deserves another chances. He looked quite OK early on but he hit the wall half way through the season. Fatigue I guess, just not used to playing that many games.
Eminger for 7th D-man. With Redden gone I have a feeling we may try and go for Willie Mitchell type. I think we'll have enough cap too.
Gilroy is a little underrated by our fanbase. His defense was better than expected and even though most were expecting his offense to be better, it could pick up this year. It needs to eventually but I think it will.

Wow he finished even? I remember people here were being very critical of him defensively. Del Zotto really got a free pass with his -20 cause of his offensive skills as a rookie.
I'd rather see both Gilroy and Emminger on the bottom pairing with one of Potter/Sauer as the 7th. I like to give McDonagh some time in the minors, as NHL ready as he seems, I'm hesitant to put him in the NHL so soon.

Potter is a Penguin now but I get what you mean. But I think it will come down to who wins the spot in camp. If McDonagh outplays guys like Sauer, Gilroy, Valentenko, he will get the job.

you are correct sir. I just meant some long time prospect, Sauer. What ever happened to Heikkinen? He looked pretty good last year, I'd be ok with him as our #7.

I don't think he accepted our QO. Even if we retain his rights im 99% sure that he isnt signed to play here next year.
