Brings size, grit and probably between 12-18 goals to the bottom 6 at a very reasonable 1M. A legitimate bottom 6 NHL player with NHL experience. Does what Bernier kinda did at half the price.

He should be motivated to play for a winner and to play for a new contract next year.

Gillis has been a rockstar this offseason, one of the best Canuck offseasons ever, if not the best.

This move pushes a fringe NHL/AHLer out of the lineup too and means that players will have to fight tooth and claw to make this team, love it.

4th line center (maybe) and move a d-man (Alberts, Bieksa or O'Brien) and we should be good to go.

I did not believe in the DinoD but I have been shown the light. Although I would like another confirmed report. Nothing against Dan Murphy but he's not your typical hockey insider.

I just arrive in San Franciso and am getting ready for my connection so I haven't read the entire thread, etc.
Yeah, because flying on a teams private plane and staying in the same hotels gets you nothing.....

Yeah that would make a lot more sense since he broke the news a few hours before anyone else.

I wonder if Burrows' injury has anything to do with this signing (or pushing this signing). I.e Torres might actually sub in a top 6 role (he did that on and off) until Burrows come back then drop down to the 3rd line and push everyone back 1 spot on the depth chart.

Gillis must have been reading my posts!

Exactly who I wanted us to sign, although I was unsure if he would sign so cheap. Our team officially kicks ass in my opinion.

Trust me this signing is very good, Torres brings a skill set that will work well for the Canucks bottom 6 specifically for the 3rd line.

I posted a 3rd line of Burrows-Malholtra-Torres. Which could see some ice time together depending on how good Hodgson/Schroeder look like. At worst Hansen will be a winger on that line and thats still a very solid 3rd line.

I don't really agree with that at all. Bernier was a great guy with a reliable two-way game. He wasn't consistently good, but he never went through long streaks where he looked downright awful, either.

I'd much rather have Bernier in the lineup, although I'll admit that for this team's needs, Torres @ $1 mil is a better fit than Bernier @ $2 mil.

I'm still not sure Torres is a great fit for permanent third-line duties. Not if you're looking to build a traditional defense-first, checking-oriented third line.

I hope it's Hordichuk.

e: I hope we roll a pest line of Torres-Kesler-Burrows every time we play Calgary or Edmonton

Interesting signing.

Torres is such a Jekyll/Hyde player it's unreal.

When he's on his game, he's one of the best physical 3rd-line types in the league - crushing hitter, skill to score 15-20 ES goals from a bottom-6 role, not out-of-place defensively (although he's never been used on the PK).

When he isn't on his game, he looks like a fat, lazy waste of space. This was the Torres we saw his last couple years in Edmonton and in Buffalo last year.

___________

One thing about this franchise under Gillis is that the atmosphere seems to bring out the best in almost everyone who plays here. Hopefully coming to a legit contender with the motivation of a pay-cut on a 1-year deal brings out the best in Torres, because if he's playing to his potential he's a real asset.

In any case, the price is definitely right. Even if he ends up on the 4th line, his pricetag for that role isn't out-of-place.

Funny how things play out - until falling apart in Buffalo, Torres was considered pretty much on par with Colby Armstrong, who got $3.5 million from Toronto. This is a better buy, to say the least.

torres hansen malhotra-would be a good shutdown line against the opposition's top lines on any given night. How is torres skating?

I agree and the motivation has to be there for him to bring it night in and night out. This could potentially be a make or break season for Torres. If he doesn't get it done this season then he might not even get a one way deal next summer.

At $1m for one year you can't really go wrong. At worst he'll be a fourth line player and if things get that bad then you just send his ass down to the minors.

Of all the players currently available Torres at $1m is definately one of the better buys out there.

It is DELICIOUS. I'm sorry for doubting you.

I think our forwards are set. Once Burrows is back:

Sedin - Sedin - Burrows
Raymond - Kesler - Samuelsson
Torres - Malhotra - Hodgson
Oreskovich - Rypien - Hansen

Looks VERY good to me. Torres adds some MUCH needed grit. Although Malhotra was a good signing, he still didn't up the grit factor all THAT much. Torres is huge.

Props to DinoD!

I like Torres, and its a reasonable contract.

Not sure if anyone knows this, but Leafs fans have been speculating the entire summer that Torres would sign with them. With this and the Sweatt signing they must hate us even more!
