The Kings have not had a mean D man like this that can make a difference since McSorley...Though not as skilled as Marty in his final days, Mitchell is tough to play against. We have OD in the end of his career and Denis Gauthier, but those guys were fillers. This is the real deal.

Crazy to think the Kings might have the best D in the division.

Ill take those numbers, its an overpayment, but he was desperately needed, and we have cap space to burn

Who's to say he can still play like that with his watermelon head though?

Hehe I know that...I'm actually ok with the signing, and if everyone's healthy the D is solid.

I'm just still laughing at Jeff Finger getting that kind of contract, and I'll unleash the Jeff Finger where applicable.

Pacific Division son!

Nobody matches up. San Jose has now struck out twice when trying to shore up their defense; they may have to give up assets now.

...

The money and term are fine. Keep in mind that Mitchell used to make $3.5/year for the past 4 years.

Even if it is a bit of an overpayment, next season the Kings will have Handzus, Williams and Poni as UFA so some of them can be gone to clear some cap room for Doughty and Johnson and Simmonds and Bernier(all RFA).

I think at this point LA is done with UFA signings. They did well to give Poni just a 1 year deal and Mitchell for 2 years is fine.

If he was not injured and probably coming off of a cup win or deep playoff run.. he would have got 4-5 on the open market for 3-5 years.. it could work out to be a STEAL of a deal compared to what guys were getting..

Can you name a better UFA who signed for cheaper this off season?

Wow! I did not expect this.

It's a risky contract, but overpaying was the only way we were going to land him.

If that is a bit much to say, I don't think I'm wrong to say that the Kings have the best defense in the Pacific Division.

Looking at the cap space available, the choice between the risk that Mitchell is versus doing nothing is an easy choice.

If he's healthy, he's a guy that is signed on July 1st. Much better player than Sutton so kudos to Lombardi for getting this done.
Yep, let's hope that old addage is true.

Individually, the 2 years, or the cap hit are cool, but its them combined that make it the overpayment in my eyes. Not that i care since we were desperate to get him and have the cap space to burn. Had to be done since LA was probably the least attractive of the 4 possible destinations, so i dont mind 1 bit

O'Donnell was replaced by Mitchell once before. I guess it was destiny.

Still nervous about his injury but with options running out I guess it's worth the risk.

Welcome to LA Willie!
