Theyre only going to be able to deal with deals who need to dump salary and willing to take draft picks. This team has very little depth to be trading for another piece. Creating a hole to fill a hole is stupid. Our best chance for an upgrade defensman was in FA, and the lot has been picked of any possible upgrades

Not confirmed yet apparently that Salo is out with the injury.... but if this does indeed take Bieksa off the market, who would be the next D-Man for the CBJ to target???

Not sure Salo being injured necessarily takes Bieksa off the market. Van. has 8 d-men signed to NHL contracts-even without Salo. They are 1.183M over the cap ceiling right now, with Mason Raymond's arbitration hearing (and subsequent award) yet to take place. They could get back under by waiving someone (along with Salo's LTIR savings) but it might be too tight for their comfort. IDK.

oh well, what I find interesting is the tweet below

Jack Johnson to #CBJ rumors dead as of now. Filatov was believed to be offered but #CBJ pulled out because of the recent Russia trip.
about 11 hours ago via web ........

http://twitter.com/*********

Was anyone aware of this, also goes on to say cbj were interested in Erhoff not Bieska. This would certanly make more sense then Bieska for Filatov. I swear Portzline is a duffis with some of his sources.

James Jackson - ?

I don't know who the guy is, but the content of his twitters seem plausible to me. Let's see how the Stralman situation works out; if the Jackets walk away from the award, then we might see if his comments re: JJ have legs or not.

I don't believe it any more than anything else on Twitter, but, hey, maybe something like that will finally help shut up the endless throngs of morons bleating about how Filatov is a "flight risk".

I've always thought that Eklund seemed to ignore the Jackets when he made up his fake rumors. Good to see James Jackson and ************* stepping up to the plate.

I'm not a big JJ fan anyhow. I think his shortcomings almost outweigh his good attributes. His puck-keeping-in-the-zone abilities rival Ron Hainsey. Plus he's just a total meathead.

But he's got a cool name. So maybe he is good.

As dru pointed out, Vancouver is now over the cap by a bit. Wouldn't surprise me in the least if this kickstarted trade talks.

Both Burrows and Salo are on LTIR until December; Salo could potentially be out even longer. This means, we are allowed to exceed the cap by somewhere around 5.5mil until then.

CAPGEEK.COM CAP CALCULATOR

FORWARDS
Henrik Sedin ($6.100m) / Daniel Sedin ($6.100m) / Mikael Samuelsson ($2.500m)
Mason Raymond ($2.550m) / Ryan Kesler ($5.000m) / Jordan Schroeder ($1.025m)
Cody Hodgson ($1.666m) / Manny Malhotra ($2.500m) / Raffi Torres ($1.000m)
Victor Oreskovich ($0.575m) / Joel Perrault ($0.510m) / Jannik Hansen ($0.825m)
/ / Rick Rypien ($0.550m)

DEFENSEMEN
Dan Hamhuis ($4.500m) / Keith Ballard ($4.200m)
Kevin Bieksa ($3.750m) / Christian Ehrhoff ($3.100m)
Alexander Edler ($3.250m) / Shane O'Brien ($1.600m)
Andrew Alberts ($1.050m) / Aaron Rome ($0.750m)

GOALTENDERS
Roberto Luongo ($5.333m) /Cory Schneider ($0.900m)

CARRY-OVER BONUS PENALTY: $90,000

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled using the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $59,400,000; CAP PAYROLL: $59,425,000; BONUSES: $975,000
CAP SPACE (23-man roster): $950,000

We can start the season below the cap, and even afford to sign Mitchell by only dumping O'Brien (assuming a 1.5mil bonus heavy contract). If/When Salo comes back, we move Bieksa. When Burrows comes back, we send one of Hodgson or Schroeder to the AHL. No problems here..

Vancouver just signed Raffi Torres for a cool mil, which puts them over the cap by precisely the same salary Bieksa recieves. Coincidence?

The Canucks will still look at trading Bieksa. But they aren't in a rush. It's moved the betting line. People are beginning to see there remains a good chance now Bieksa will start the season with Vancouver. There are a number of reasons why.

The trade market is barren (see Tomas Kaberle). The Canucks have some flexibility under the salary cap with both Alex Burrows and Salo expected to start the season on injured reserve.

Bieksa is the Canucks only healthy defencemen, among eight, with a right-handed shot. Losing him now would begin to unravel Gillis's nearly single-minded pursuit this offseason — to get better and deeper on defence.

Sure NP. Bieska isn't coming to Columbus because Howson isn't likely to either pony up the asset(s) or ownership isn't willing to pay the cash.

Neutral enough?

I am neutral on Bieksa. He'd certainly help here, but I'd think twice about giving up many assets for someone who would very likely be gone within a year. But with the Torres trade, the pressure to move him got cranked up a bit. I'd be pretty happy with Bieksa for a 2nd/3rd round pick.

So yes, I'm neutral enough.

Willie Mitchell just got picked up by LA. I think Bieksa stays in Vancouver.

Bieksa doesn't need to move, Bieksa won't be moved. Nobody knows if Salo can return yet.

Not at all. The cost difference between Torres and say, Darcy Hordichuk, isn't going to force Gillis to move Bieksa. With Mitchell signing in LA and Salo out until who knows when, I'd be surprised if Bieksa was moved before the season.

True. They don't have to dump salary until the season itself begins. And subtracting a player from a crowded lineup is a lot easier then working him into a bunch of players he's never seen before. If there's a move, it will be later rather then sooner.

Alright, here's some news.

The Canucks don't need to move Bieksa.

Burrows returns and they're still under the cap.

No news wether or not Salo will be able to return so he may never need to be moved.

At this point, it's a seller's market and the Canucks are holding all the cards.
